I was afraid that the murder on campus 2 months ago would harm Yale’s popularity as well. I had hoped that people would be able to realize this was an isolated case, but perhaps it actually did play a role in the lower number of applications.

However, I think there might be other reasons for the drop. Isn’t it the case that the high school graduating class of 2010 is smaller than last year’s class? I thought I had heard somewhere that we were the peak, in which case the drop in applications would be due to a drop in applicants in general. I guess this statement can only be verified when total numbers come in later on, but I don’t think decreased popularity is the only reason for the drop.

Finally, if Yale admits less students from the EA pool, it would be to accept more from the RD pool. That’s what they claim they’ve been trying to do, and honestly that would be the only good reasoning behind it.

that’s surprising. Although I think that the internationa pool increased; after all, Harvard and Princeton no longer have Early Decision, and Stanford is need-aware towards international students.

totallysunshine ~ I’m thinking of the glass as half empty to prepare myself for the inevitable letter of rejection that I’m going to get on dec. 15th xD

If I convince myself that there’s gonna be a redic low acceptance rate and that I am gonna be rejected forsure…then the worst that can happen is me getting rejected and saying ‘oh okay, I expected that.’ right? right? lol I’m still trying to convince myself that this strategy’s gonna work…

I don’t think it’s the recession at all. Duke and Stanford’s applications (among others, most likely) went up, and Yale definitely has better financial aid (for me, it could be 10,000-15,000 less per year than Duke). Yale also isn’t binding, so you would think that would draw more students. I really think it’s the murders, there are only a few hundred less applications, so these could be the few people that are willing to let this get in the way of their love of Yale.
Also, the dean of admissions said that they will be admitting 700-750 again this year, which would be about 14-15%. It’s right here: [Yale Daily News - Early applications fall 5 percent](http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/university-news/2009/11/17/early-applications-fall-5-percent/)
