Lower SAT Subjects: Should I Explain?

Perhaps this belongs under the Common App, but it could apply for any college.
I'm applying to Yale SCEA. My SAT Subject scores are not exactly as high as they could be but I can't retake them (720 Math I, 710 Bio M) Now, I can't really explain math but I can explain Bio. I am in IB Bio SL, the only IB science course my school offers. The curriculum for SAT and IB Bio simply does not overlap. When I took the test, I only knew of cells, chemistry of life, and some genetics. I knew no organismal bio and had to self-study everything. Should I mention this in additional info?

I don’t mean to be pushy, but bump

If you say that in your essay, that is going to lower your chances. They will see you as a person who didn’t study for the SAT II, hence a slightly cocky person.

I definitely wasn’t going to put it in my essay but in the additional info document that you can upload to the common. I figured it might be important to let them know I self-studied but I wasn’t too sure how it would look.

If you can maturely justify your lower score, then you should. Just make sure that this helps your application, instead of hurting it.

Thank you for your help  I’ll work on it.

I believe you are missing the whole point of subject tests: they are designed to test how much you know about a subject. If your class did not prepare you adequately enough for a test, then the collegeboard expects you to study on your own. Anyone can say that the class they took didn’t do them justice, how would anyone know? When you sign up for any test by the college board, you are expected to do the research and figure our for yourself what you need to know, study, and prepare in order to take the test. IMHO if I were a college admissions officer and the excuse I read for a “low” score was that they didn’t study enough for it it would be laughable. If you feel it will do you justice to write about it then go ahead, this is just my opinion.
