Boston University is one of my top choices at the moment, but I’m not sure if my GPA will allow me to be admitted. If somebody could (somewhat) realistically give me an idea of my chances, it would be much appreciated. My stats/background is as follows:
GPA: 3.52 UW 3.95 W
Class Rank: 40/313
ACT: 34
Honors classes: Precalculus, Spanish III - Will take next year: Honors Research
AP classes: European History, English Lang, English Lit, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Physics C: Mechanics - Will take next year: US History
Dual Enrolled classes: Calculus 3, Differential Equations, Partial Differential Equations, Intro to Higher Mathematics - Will take next year: Real Variables I, Real Variables II, Intro to Geometry, Linear Algebra, Elementary Theory of Numbers
Activities/EC’s: Marching Band (10th grade-present), Pep Band (10th grade - present), Fencing (8th grade - present), Math Team (joined this past year)
Academic team (joined this past year)
I’m also doing research this summer with a mathematics professor at the university I dual enroll at. I don’t think it’ll be published, but I’ll have to wait and see since it’s only been a few weeks.
If it matters, I’d be applying to CAS with the intention of majoring in mathematics.
trust me when i say you have a high chance
Thanks for the feedback, though I’m surprised you seem so confident about it. Is a 3.5 not that big a deal to BU?
No 3.5 is not a big dealyou are ranked in the top 10 of your class so your 3.5 is obviously tight , you have shown you have the smarts with your ACT.
Awesome! I was kinda thinking all the schools I’m interested in were reaches, other than my safeties, so it’s nice to hear I have a legitimate chance at another school
Apply to BU smart, pick major that leans to your strengths, not maybe the hardest program to get into… And show LOTS of interest, they love that at BU, it is so well known and popular and so students apply there and many make it a Safety for the IVYs and MIT to be in Boston, they love to know its your first/favorite choice. My daughter is there now as a rising Freshman and it was a BIG stretch, but she did everything to get in, we visited 3 times, she went to 2 local events, talked with the recruiter at her high school, wrote emails asking additional questions from the BU local rep, she asked for an optional interview with the college of her choice and got to talk one-on-one with the dean. The dean said she was on the low side (top of the low 25% in ACT) but good grades (not great Top 1/3 of her class at a pretty competitive public school.
The dean said she just want to make sure students can handle the work and after meeting my daughter felt her dedication and perseverance would serve her well. ( when we visited at admitted students day the dean came over and told my daughter congrats, it made her day she remembered her.
After talking to the Dean she applied early decision, not because the dean told her to, she was just convinced she would do well there.
She is doing very well ( by BU standards B+ average- it is true it a pretty hard school to get an A) but she got accepted to a pretty competitive study aboard program and is heading to London this weekend.
stay positive
Congrats to your daughter And yeah, as stated above I’ll be applying with an intention of majoring in mathematics, which I’m hoping my very mathematically oriented app would help in. Does how well you suit your major matter a lot in admissions? I’ve got a 36 ACT math, will graduate with ~40 college credits from AP and dual enrollment in math classes (with A’s in all), am currently doing research with a professor in math and I’ll probably ask for LoR from math professors - one of which I know thinks very very highly of me - so I’d hope that I’d stand out among others applying in the same major.
Also, how can I show interest if it’s not possible to visit and if I’m not ready to commit to ED?
You’ve got a good chance. I didn’t have nearly as good of a resume and got in. But it all comes down to who is looking at your application, and I say this as someone who worked in the admissions office. Everything is looked at, they want a well rounded individual. Maybe you should start volunteering at a local food pantry or nursing home too. It can only help
@hazelgirl276 Good advice right one. It is so very hard to find excellent students in Math who are well rounded ( my son got BS in Math, BA in Econ dual degree form William and Mary and was told by all his Ivy interviewers ( he got into Columbia Eng and Brown) it was odd he was such an excellent writer ( he won some prestigious writing competitions) and was Student athlete and Capt of a team, President of a club etc… But he is still such a nerd…
