I have been accepted to the music department of Loyola University New Orleans and Berklee College of Music. I'm just wondering which of these two schools is best for a student attend to be a classical Piano Player and also intrested in Jazz music? Even if you don't have a direct answer for me, your ideas and comments and/or your knowledge on each school's music curricula would be greatly appreciated. Thank you =)

Hi Vincson,

Just a bit of a heads up, Berklee is a great music school, but with every genre EXCEPT classical. They have tremendous jazz students there as well people focused on rock, pop, metal, latin, etc… but they don’t have any classical music program.

Loyola NO has a good music program and also is in a great city for jazz. I know they do have a classical program and a jazz program so if you wanted to focus on classical piano, of the two of them, Loyola is a better match.

That being said, are there any other schools you have looked at/been accepted at? In no way am I trying to bash Loyola, but there are many more programs out there that have stronger programs than Loyola.

I hope that helped. I’m very surprised in your research however that you didn’t find Berklee College of Music’s non-classical focus and turned your attention else where.

Hello, Funkydrummer

I really appreciate your reply, it helps a lot. Actually I’m still waiting for the result of Tulane University. Do you have any idea of this school? Or do you have any other recommendation of school that have a great classcial piano program? Thank you.

I don’t know too much about Tulane’s music dept. though I do know that it is RIGHT next to Loyola so that’s pretty cool. I believe, out of the two of them though, Loyola has a better rep for music.

That being said, don’t trust me. Google the program and do some research on Tulane Music on this forum.

As for other schools you should consider for classical piano, refer to above. I’m a jazz guy so I don’t know too much about classical. A lot of it probably comes down to who you want to study with. There so many great conservatories and universities out there (Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory, Eastman, Peabody, Oberlin, the list goes on and on!) but I think for a lot of people, who you’ll be studying with is a big factor.

It sounds to me, you need to do some more research and see what you really want.

I think you are right, the most important thing is who I want to study with. Thank you so much, it really helps. If you have other friends who are more familiar with classical Program, please let them give me more information. Thanks again. I’ll do more research too.
