I was accepted to Loyola University - New Orleans about two weeks ago and have a few questions for those who have attended, visited, or have students there. I'm really interested in going to this school, but as I am from the mid-west I am unable to visit right now and have yet to meet another person who has gone there or has applied to the school.

My G.P.A. is currently 3.49 unweighted, which I know isn't that good. However all of the other colleges that I have been accepted to have been very generous with merit money $12,000-$14,000 per year. Is Loyola in the same realm as this and are they generous with merit money? What about financial aid?

A few more questions:

I know New Orleans has a problem with crime. How is the area around the campus?
How easy is it to take classes at Tulane?
Though I applied to Tulane as well (still waiting, though probably a rejection), which school is better in terms of atmosphere, community, etc. I know Tulane has a good reputation in academics, but I have heard little about Loyola's.

Also, what was your experience like with Loyola (student, parent, applicant)?

My BIL lives down there, and knows many that graduated from Loyola. In many ways it may feel like a school that gets the kids that Tulane denies, but there are many that prefer the school. I know that Tulane and Loyola share a few facilities, and the campuses are both considered very safe. They are in essentially residential neighborhood (and upscale one at that0 and crime in NO is often based on opportunity (picking the pocket of a drunk, alcohol-drug incidence of fighting, etc).

I attended Loyola and am also from the Midwest so hopefully I can help you out. About 84% of students receive some form of financial aid and they offer more than 450 merit-based and talent based scholarships each year.
I cannot speak for Tulane but I loved Loyola because I didn’t feel like just another number there. My class sizes never exceeded twenty students and I was able to forge relationships with my professors and class mates that I might not have been able to at a larger University.

Ultimately it is your decision to make and I know I would never make a decision as momentous as where you are going to attend college without having a look first. Come down and visit and I think you’ll be as charmed as I was.
