My son was accepted at Loyola (which my husband and myself LOVE). He received a Presidential scholarship and was accepted into the Honors program. He was also accepted at Pitt for the Honors program and received a small scholarship, we are waiting to hear about an alumni legacy scholarship.
He also applied to Georgetown and is waiting to hear from them.
Our question is, "Can anyone out there, compare through personal experience, Loyola and Georgetown for us?"
Our son is hooked on Georgetown, but his father and I both think Loyola is the way to go. We just get the feeling that Loyola is more concerned about their students and you get what you pay for. Georgetown seems like it is selling its name and not too much concern for students. Possibly living on a past reputation?
Any thoughts concerning these two schools?

I’m not a student at either, so I can’t fully answer your question. However, I do suggest that you post this in the Georgetown forum as well, to get a variety of answers.

Naturally, most Loyola students will prefer their school and most Georgetown students will prefer theirs, but by looking at why they prefer theirs, you can try to get a grasp on which is better for your son.

I applied to both as well, and am in a similar situation with Loyola and Georgetown as your son, acceptance and scholarship-wise, though Loyola is not as big of a consideration for me as when I applied. Personally, I know that Georgetown would be better for me, but that’s because of the School of Foreign Service program. If your son applied to the College or another school, I really wouldn’t know much about them.

Have you visited both schools, and has your son had a chance to sit in on classes, spend some time with students at both places?

My oldest dau was accepted at Georgetown, spent the accepted students weekend there. She loved the place and was all gung ho Gtown until she spent the accepted students weekend at Brown, which clinched it for her. Wound up there. Majored in computer scie; Brown is strong in that.

Third dau, current college applicant, visited Gtown and loved it, wanted to go there—until the next few schools were visited. She is accepted at Loyola & we are waiting to hear from three more schools and see aid pkgs, etc. She loves Loyola but she also loves a couple other schools so she has serious thinking to do coming up.

I think, myself, honors program at Loyola sounds like they get great treatment, special events, etc, the academics there look excellent. We have been on the campus three times & I am always impressed by the friendliness of the students.

If the student is very interested in the Foreign Svs, Political Scie kinds of topics, Gtown is stronger & DC is a great place for internships, etc. If not, I wd make serious visits to each, assuming he is accepted at both of course!

Maybe we’ll see each other at Loyola!

What’s his major. This should also play a major role. If he’s going into anything that deals with politics or law, Georgetown is the place to go.

His major (for now, I’m sure it will change) is pre-med. He has thought of engineering also. We’ve been told that Georgetown only accepts 2-3 of it’s own grads for G-town med. school. My husband and I are thinking that Georgetown would be great for poli sci or foreign service, but for pre-med our son can get just as good an education (possibly better) at Loyola without the 56K price tag attached to it. We are sure we would not qualify for financial aid. Thoughts?

There is still medical school to pay for, after the BA/BS.

Loyola is building a brand new sciences building.

If he is coming from their Honors program and does super well while he is in the school, he ought to look good to med schools. Have you been able to get the stats from Loyola as to med school acceptance rate?
