I am looking into several colleges to attend. I live in chicago and would like to go to law school after undergrad. I have narrowed down my options to 2 schools in IL and they are Loyola University Chicago(business administration) and UIUC(LAS Econ). Just in case I change my mind along the way, and want to go to biz school or get a job in chicago, is Loyola going to make very much difference in employment opportunity compared to graduating UIUC?

I'm not very familiar with Loyola but i know that UIUC is a very good university and having a degree from it will be a plus.

If you want to stay in chicago, probably not.

I doubt it...UIUC is way better than Loyola for person looking to go to law school...don't you think so??

UIUC = University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, which is in downstate Illinois

The U of I branch in Chicago is UIC -University of Illinois Chicago (used to be called Chicago Circle Campus) For years, this was the poor cousin of the downstate UIUC campus. It was created to educate servicemen after WW2, and has always had lower admission standards than UIUC.

UIC and Loyola both have large numbers of commuter students. Both schools have been working hard to upgrade their images. I don't think that one school has a better "name" than the other - Loyola is better known among Catholics, of course, but UIC is well known for its urban policy and social work studies, among others.

Loyola has a six-year undergrad/law school program if that interests you. UIC has no law school. Both schools offer good educations at affordable prices, but with the high number of commuters, school spirit is lacking compared to other colleges.

???? "I have narrowed down my options to 2 schools in IL and they are Loyola University Chicago(business administration) and UIUC(LAS Econ)." she said UIUC not UIC..

Thanks for your inputs guys... This dillema I have here makes two totally different careers for me. If I stick with my option to go to law school, then I am going for at least top 30 schools. If not I would be much better off sticking to the business career for the sake of our small family business. I am willing to grow it. I am just worried that going to Loyola is a silly mistake over opportunities that I will get from UIUC. Do Loyola graudates and UIUC graduates get treated significantly different, not only in IL but outside of the state?

The feel of the two campuses are going to be very different. You should know that, but even though LUC is a large school, UIUC is going to be -huge-. It has twice the number of undergrad students. I personally wonder what kind of opportunities you'd have with such a big school. Being in the city could also help you with internships and opportunities like that when you're in college.

What about Depaul? I personally like it better. :p I know it has a good business program, and I think of it as more reputable than LUC.

I don't think the difference between LUC and UIUC is going to be such a big difference once you graduate. Also, for what it's worth, a kid from my school went to LUC for undergrad and now he's at UChicago's law school.

Sorry, I misread your first post as wanting to go to school IN chicago. Now I see that you were referring to UIUC all along.

UIUC has a better reputation, hands down, than Loyola. It has more of a nationwide reputation, and is even known internationally. There are a lot of kids there who are top students but need the price break that an in-state school provides. Some of Illinois' programs are tops in the country - accounting is number one, and actuarial science is strong.

If you are headed for a top 30 law school, you should look into the honors program at UIUC. However, do look at Loyola's 6 year program. Loyola also gives out a fair number of scholarships. The real decision is all about what you want, and what fits you best.
