LS 3A vs LS 23L

LS 3A is the "intro to molecular biology lab" that's a corequisite to LS3. LS 23L is "introduction to laboratory and scientific methodology" and is also listed as a corequisite of either LS3 or LS4. As a neuroscience major, am I supposed to take both? neither? Just one of them? I'm a bit confused.

Depends on when you took LS2. If you took LS2 during the 2010-2011 school year, you already completed the LS2 labs. In this case, you would enroll for LS3A so you can complete the LS3 labs. If you have difficulty enrolling in this lab (e.g. space fills up), email Dr. Pfleugl and he will give you a PTE number. If you took LS2 during the 2011-2012 school year, you completed neither the LS2 or LS3 labs. In this case, you would enroll for LS23L, where you will finish the LS2 and LS3 labs.

I took only LS2 in 2011-2012, in order to take LS23L, I will have to take LS3 first, right?

You can take LS23L concurrently with LS 3. I think it’s also possible to take LS23L in a different quarter after you take LS3. From my experience, I think it’s best to take it concurrently with LS3 since the material is still fresh.

I have never taken LS lab before, does LS23L need a lot of work? How difficult is it to get an A in this class?

LS23L is a joke of a class (too easy).

@phospholipase Have you taken LS23L? with LS3 at same time?

I checked out LS23L syllabus, it seems to me it needs tedious and diligent work!?
I have 2 questions.
(1) Can one still take LS23L after taking LS3?
(2) How was the LS23L grade distribution?

I’m doing LS 3 and 23L concurrently at the moment. All quizzes and reports have been at or near perfect. Definitely nothing in comparison to chemistry labs.

The difficulty of LS23L depends on how your TA. The pre-lab and in-class quizzes are generally straightforward since they test on the basic concepts of the lab. The labs and reports are do-able, but may be tedious since they can be long (~5-6 pages, solo lab reports) and require some thought. You will only have to write reports for LS2 labs. All LS3 labs are completed in class. If the class format is still the same, your final will be online. Also very do-able. They take questions from past quizzes and provide practice finals. You can also get together with a group and work on it together.

In regards to your 2 questions:

1) You should be able to, however I recommend taking it with LS3. The labs and reports may give you a more hands-on approach to the material and will ask you to recall information from lectures. Keep in mind that LS23L is also a pre-req/co-req for some intro upper division classes if you decide to take it later on.
2) I and my friends all aced the class. I don’t know anyone who has gotten lower. An A is definitely attainable. As long as you put in a decent effort, you should be fine. I recommend talking to your TA to see what he/she looks for/emphasizes. I did so-so on my first lab report and asked my TA about what I should do to improve for next time. She appreciated my effort and actually gave me back some points. My lab report scores from then on vastly improved.

Good luck! :)

Do you think taking LS3 and LS23L in one summer session is doable?

I think it’s do-able, but that’s if you’re only taking LS3 and LS23L during summer. If you add another class, there may be a lot to juggle. I felt that the LS3 labs were a good hands-on supplement while I studied for the LS3 midterms/finals.

Are the three people in a group pre-assigned or do we pick them ourselves?

How long are the lab reports for LS23L?

For my labs, I was able to pick my group. If you want to be in the same group with your friends, make sure to come a bit early so you can save a table for them. Lab reports are ~5-6 pages (depending on your TA/lab/writing) and are done solo for LS23L.
