Ls10h

Has everyone here taken LS10H: Research Training in Genes, Genetics, and Genomics with Banerjee and Olson before? I heard the class is really intense, and some people even sleep in the labs overnight just to finish up on lab work. Is this true? But on bruinwalk, it seems like everyone is getting pretty good grades. How intense is the class exactly? And how hard is it?

I really want to get trained properly before I jump into research, but I am not so sure about the workload of this class. I will also be taking LS2, Chem 14C, and an UD language class, which makes it a pretty heavy load for the quarter. Any insight would help, thanks.

I took the class. And yes, I spent around 3 all nighters in the lab. Everyone does get good grades, but now Olson is facing restrictions, so he’s giving out more A-'s and B+'s. It is a lot of work, but it’s a great experience if you want to learn about the PROCESS behind research. I say process because unless you work in a Drosophila/genomic lab afterward, you won’t learn a lot of molecular techniques (PCR, qPCR, DNA extraction, etc.) But, you DO learn a lot about writing grants and a research paper.

I would not suggest taking this class with LS2 and 14C because those classes move pretty quickly. If you do end up taking the class, I suggest that you get working in the lab ASAP so that you can get the dissecting technique down (which in my opinion, is the hardest part about the class). The class is pretty much move-at-your-own-pace, so the more time you invest at the beginning of the quarter = less franticness around finals time.

Oh, and Dr. Olson is the nicest guy, ever! Banerjee… I am not a fan.

i dont think people actually take it to learn research techniques…most people take it to try to get into the biomed research minor. i think the time could be used more wisely if youre taking it just to learn about research.

jch1989, what do you mean by dissecting technique? do we have to dissect fruitflies? (my worst fear about the class, haha)

I only said the research technique thing because my roommates thought that taking it would help them to learn molecular bio techniques for research labs later. In my class, not that many people took it for the research minor… and it was weird because they didn’t let that many people into the minor.

And yea, you do have to dissect the fruit flies. That’s all you do for about 8 (or more) weeks… but surprisingly, it’s not that disgusting!
