LSA Honors program

What are the advantages of joining the LSA Honors program?? I mean I received an email from school about it, but I still don’t clearly understand its advantages.

Mainly you get to live in South Quad and get priority registration. But you can also be placed in South Quad or West Quad, which is nicer IMO, slighter quieter, without being in the Honors program. Students love Markley too, but as an Honors student, you wouldn’t be placed there.

As far as registration goes, my freshman non-Honors LSA kid has had no problems getting classes.

Agreed as above. My son was in West Quad. It’s like a hotel. Very nice. He ended up getting all the classes he wanted and not in honors. Ate all meals in South Quad. (best food according to him and others)

One thing I forgot to mention is that honors students have their own advisors and their own lounge. They have honors socials and occasionally honors get a few reserved seats in some classes. Again, my kid had plenty of opportunities to speak with LSA advisors, when needed. And doesn’t need the lounge. There are plenty of lounges. Maybe an LSA honors student might check in here, but I don’t think honors at Michigan is a huge deal.

For me, the biggest benefit is being assured housing in South Quad. It has the shortest walk to the stadium, arena, Greek life and the IM.

Sounds like LSA Honors doesn’t provide smaller, more intimate class sizes (ie Plan II at UT). LSA Honors students attend the same courses with non-Honors students, but additional access to LSA advisors.

Does that sound accurate?

@sushiritto @Knowsstuff thanks guys! Well, since I’ve got plenty of times this semester, I`ll just give it a shot and see how it goes. By the way, do I have to pay additional fee if I get into honors?

No extra fees from what I can see. That would be horrible. Good Luck @Rgdodp

There are Honors classes available, depending on major and level. But I think most of the time, if you need a Honors course, and one is not available, you’re expected to negotiate “extra work” with the professor of the course in order to convert it to an Honors course.

Remember you can always start as non-Honors and “join” in progress during your time at UMich.

@sushiritto Are all Honors students guaranteed South Quad even if they don’t want to be on an Honors floor? Or only the ones who pick Honors housing?

@sbcvtm Yes, honors students have resrved space in South Quad. As far as I know, the student has no choice in the matter of where they’re placed. You accept what they give you.
