Hi everyone,

Sorry, this is my second thread in about two days...

Anyways, I'm stuck between applying to LSA and CoE for my freshman year. My plan was to go to LSA for two years and then apply to the College of Pharmacy, but after job shadowing, I didn't really enjoy the profession as much as I had thought I would. My "backup plan" was to go into engineering, as I'm very math/science oriented, and I think the profession would be a good fit.

Basic stats are:
31 ACT (33 Math and Science)
3.953 UW GPA
Solid teacher/counselor recs
Good essays
Some extracurriculars
etc.

Now, for the questions. Would it be smarter to apply to LSA or CoE, as right now I'm torn between the two? If I were to end up choosing LSA, could I take classes such as Eng101, Chem 125/126, Chem 130, etc, and transfer to CoE and still be on par to graduate with first year engineering students, and vice versa from CoE to LSA? I don't want to end up having to go an extra year because I chose to go to LSA/CoE. Is there anything special that I have to do to apply to the CoE? I can't find anywhere on the Common App where it even asks you to specify which college you're applying to. Is this the point of the second supplemental essay?

Thanks everyone in advance for the advice/help!

Engineering. Your math score might be a little low, but you are otherwise a very strong applicant, you’re very likely to get into Engineering.

There’s no reason why you couldn’t graduate in 4 years as a transfer though… If do go the LSA route, be sure to take English 125, Engr101, and as much of the Chem, Physics, and Math as you can take/need to take. Try to avoid going with light on math/science schedules just because no one will tell you not to.

Thanks for the advice. I feel like I’ll have a better chance at getting into LSA than Engineering, though, but that’s just me.

I’d also like to know if the second supplemental essay is your “choice” of colleges. I haven’t seen where else you would specify wanting to go to LSA, CoE, Nursing, etc.

All advice/input is still appreciated!

I believe you’re thinking of pre-admit, like for Ross and such. There is no pre-admit for CoE.

I’m having trouble figuring out how to differentiate LSA and CoE on my application. There isn’t anywhere where it asks you which college you want to apply to. Also, don’t CoE students have generally higher stats than those accepted into LSA? Or is it, if you’re accepted into LSA, you can go to CoE if you choose? I’m really confused. :|

If you’re torn between LSA and COE I would apply to COE. You’re GPA and ACT are strong enough for both. You can transfer from one school to the other but it is easier to transfer from COE to LSA than vice versa. Also the transfer to COE may make it more difficult to finish in four years.

I feel like I’d have a better shot at LSA than CoE, but am I selling myself short? I’m just really excited thinking about going to UMich and don’t want that dream to fall apart.

^^ Apply to CoE. Ironically, the ones who are most nervous are usually the most prepared and qualified. I think you definitely fit this :)

well, Eng. is really hard to get into, and it would totally suck if you applied to it and didn’t get in. but, you can go for LSA and definitely get in, and then transfer. but hey, it’s only a suggestion, it’s totally your call bro. but good job!

I’ve taken the advice of the majority here, my friends and my mom, and am currently finishing up my essay for the College of Engineering. Hopefully all works out for the best! :)

Also, I found a statistic that said CoE accepts 56% of undergrad applicants. This is somewhat reassuring, as I thought CoE had a significanlty lower acceptance rate than LSA.

^its because most people who apply to engineering are the ones who are qualified for it. People wanting to come to u of m but do not have the scores will just shoot for LSA. and *** are you worried about? 3.9 gpa? go relax with friends

UMich is the only school that I really want to go to, since I’m staying in state. It would just be a major let down if I didn’t get in, that’s all.
