I'm an an international school senior, planning on applying to University of Michigan as an international student.
Until a few days ago, I've been preparing to apply to the College of Engineering. However, my counselor told me that it is nearly impossible for me to get in (5% chance) with my GPA and scores (GPA 3.76) (SAT Math:770 Writing: 720 Reading:590) (TOEFL ibt 116 ). Our counselor is new to his job and I don't really trust his judgements. So I'm depending on College Confidential to help me come to a solid decision.
Would it be more beneficial for me to apply to LSA and attempt to transfer to COE or would it be better for me to apply straight to COE??
PS: I'm planning on submitting my application before November 1st, priority admissions

While the data is now a couple of years old, this should give you some idea of the competitiveness of Michigan Engineering.

[Michigan Engineering | Student Profile](http://www.engin.umich.edu/about/studentprofile.html)

Your SATs are above the average but your GPA is below. I have no idea if your international status helps or hurts your chances. Michigan financial aid is notoriously poor for OOS & international students.

Visit the Michigan section of CC. There are a number of engineers who hang out there and they should be able to give you a better idea about transferring from LS&A

the 1400 median is math+verbal, so he’s below the mean with a 1360.

just a sidebar, you have an interesting set of scores! your verbal is low, yet your writing score is pretty high, it’s unusual.

I think you should apply to COE, COE likes high Math and science scores, judging by your Math SAT score, you should be competitive. It doesn’t make any sense to apply to LSA if you really want to be in COE, and it’s not like LSA is that much easier. Your GPA is on the low side, 25% of COE had high school GPA of 4.0, but I’m hoping that your math/science grades are stellar.
