LSAT/LSDAS Registration

I'm current a junior and am planning to go to law school right after graduation. I'm taking the June LSAT, and will register for it sometime in February or March.

My question is: should I also subscribe to LSDAS when I do my LSAT registration? I understand that LSDAS has to be renewed every year; hence I'm thinking that it would be wiser for me to register sometime over the summer (otherwise I'd be "wasting" several months, and in the unlikely event that I'm still doing apps next Feb/March, I'd have to pay to renew). I can't think of any drawbacks to waiting until perhpas August to subscribe.

Is there any good reason for me to register for LSDAS now?

Thanks.

LSDAS General Information

Your LSDAS period will extend for five years from your registration date. If you register for a Law School Admission Test (LSAT) at any time during your LSDAS period, the LSDAS period will be extended five years from your latest LSAT registration.

Registering for LSDAS

If you are applying to a law school that requires the Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS) you must register and pay for the LSDAS.
You do not need to register for LSDAS at the same time as you register for the LSAT.

We suggest that you register for LSDAS approximately six weeks before you plan to apply to law school. This should allow enough time for you to gather transcripts and other documents.

<a href="http://www.lsac.org/LSAC.asp?url=lsac/about-the-lsdas.asp%5B/url%5D">http://www.lsac.org/LSAC.asp?url=lsac/about-the-lsdas.asp</a></p>

Umm..don't listen to lsac.org on this point. It's fine to wait and not use up that eligibility. However, get registered no later than late July-early August before your apps go in. Six weeks really isn't enough. One reason is that you should be registered before you ask your college to send your transcript to LSDAS. It can take some colleges up to three weeks to mail out a transcript.
Once your transcript is received, it can take 4-5 weeks for LSDAS to analyze it.

A "wave" of registrations hits LSDAS every time a LSAT is administered. If you wait until the fall to fill out the applications--as most June test-takers do--and don't register more than six weeks befofre the October test-- you'll hit the "wave" registering for the October LSAT. You want EVERYTHING to be complete before the October wave hits so that your app will be in the pipeline in front of the October test-takers.

Hope that's clear!

Thanks. I'm assuming most October test-takers register in August/September, so I should probably complete my LSDAS subcription in July to avoid the "wave."

Just one more question: what are my chances of getting my first-choice test site if I register for the June LSAT in March? (I'm in the NYC metro area). If that's risky, would I be in good shape if I register in February?

Jonri -- you mean that LSAC registration expires after a year and will require reregistration, complete with another $109 fee? I was thinking about registering sooner rather than later -- just to get it out of the way. Should I not do so?

Test sites in the NYC area do fill up (according to my d) but I understand they MIGHT open up additional rooms at a site, if needed. If you know you are taking the exam in June, I'd suggest you register as soon as you can.

mike: as far as I know, a LSDAS subscription is good for 12 months and you'd need to renew should you require its service beyond that. That's why I asked the question I did in my original post.

marny: I was under the assumption that most people register for the June test in April. Hence I thought if I do it in March that should be good enough, and if I register in Feb I'd be all but guaranteed of my first choice test site. But from what you said, it sounds like it's much tighter than I imagined. I think I'll register in the next couple weeks, I hope that's not too late as far as getting my 1st choice goes.

soulofheaven,

My D is sitting for the february test and registered in november to ensure that she got her first choice of locations.

I would say the sooner you do it the better (you don't have to register for the lsdas to register for the lsat). Keep in mind that many people take the June LSAT and depending on where you want to take the exam at, spaces are limited. Also keep in mind that undergrad students attending those schools will also register (if they have not already) early to ensure they get a spot on their campus.

In NYC the test is held at the following locations:

Bronx, Fordham University
Brooklyn, C.U.N.Y. - Brooklyn College
Brooklyn, South Shore High School
3620 Flushing, Queens College
Jamaica, Saint Johns University
New York, Columbia University
New York, Fordham University School of Law
New York, New York University
NewYork, Pace University - New York City
Staten Island, Wagner College
Stony Brook, Stony Brook University
White Plains, Pace University School of Law

good luck to you.

Sybbie: thanks for the list and good luck to your daughter!

I didn't realize there are so many test sites in this area; how many choices can I put down on the registration? If someone's top choices are all maxed out, will he simply be assigned to the site that's closest to him?

At least if you do it online, you'll be told when sites are not available and asked to pick the best alternative.

Hi Soul- Just got off the LSD site. There was a discussion going on stating that some of the NYC sites were already full for the June test. So if you haven't signed up yet, I suggest you do so real soon. Apparently you can also go on a waitlist, as they sometimes do open up additional rooms in a test center.
Good luck!!

Marny: I just registered and you're right, 3 of the 4 nyc test sites were full! I didn't know so many locations are closed for the June exam. Good thing I registered before the last site also fills up. I didn't see anything about waitlists; where do I get info about that?
