Who applied ed to LSM? How were the stats last year?

300 applied for about 25 spots last year. There is definitely much higher preference for early decision applicants however. Good luck!

25/300? That’s still barely 8 percent though. Also considering the self-selection on top of that…

Just to provide additional insight, the way it works is that CAS and Wharton each review your app and forward it to the LSM admissions committee. Only about 100 applicants make it past this initial review.

@breaker746 Since about half (approximately) of the 300 would be applying for the 12-13 spots available for ED applicants, does that mean that 2/3 of the apps move on past the initial review (100 of the 150)?

That’s assuming equal divisions between ED and RD, but just in general.

So does this mean you are accepted by wharton + CAS prior to being considered for LSM, and if not, you are not even considered for LSM.

Bumpbump bump

I applied to LSM early. Can’t do much but keep my fingers crossed at this point…
Good luck to everyone.

I’m gonna try to clear up some misconceptions about the LSM application process here:
Your application goes to your Penn regional rep. They read it and if they decide that you seem like a fit for the program, they send it to the LSM committee (the LSM committee doesn’t get all of the application, only specific parts). This happens for about 100 applicants (I don’t have a confirmation of the breakdown of RD/ED, but I’ve heard the 50-50 number a lot). The LSM committee (comprised of the faculty directors and the advising director) reads the applications and formulates opinions of the applicants. They then go to a meeting with an admissions committee (where your regional rep advocates for you, providing additional color based on your entire application) and select candidates in that meeting.
If your application at any point does not get selected for LSM, your application is automatically reviewed in the exact same pool as every other applicant to your “second-choice” school, with no bias due to LSM. If you do not select the box on your ED application to be considered ED for your “second-choice” school, you still get considered RD.
Hope that helped.

@penn, thanks, that helps clear up a bit. So does this mean that one is only either accepted or rejected from LSM as opposed to being deferred from LSM specifically?

My daughter’s roommate got into the LSM program last year and she is very busy. So far she really likes it and its a great program but expect to work your butt off.

Hi everybody, I was just wondering if anyone had any input on my situation. I applied to LSM with CAS as a backup in RD, and my decision says “The Admissions Selection Committee has chosen to defer a final decision on your application to the University of Pennsylvania until the Regular Decision date of March 27, 2014.”

Anyone know if this means I’m still in the running for LSM in RD or if I was rejected from LSM and am now only being considered for CAS?

I’m pretty sure, from discussions I’ve had, that LSM itself does not defer people, but rather gives an accept/reject decision (not 100% sure, this is just how I’m remembering the conversation I had.)

Thanks for the reply Penn2017! I also initially thought the same as you, but according to post #2 on this thread, http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-pennsylvania/683246-applied-vagelos-lsm-wailisted.html, it’s apparently possible to be deferred from the program as well.

I e-mailed admissions, so hopefully we can have a clear answer on this soon since it appears to be a question that’s existed over the years. I’ll update you guys since I’m sure this also applies to M&T applicants.

Was anyone accepted? I was also deferred and I selected Wharton as my backup ED. Does this mean I was deferred for the program or Wharton?

^You were probably deferred for Wharton.

Also, if there are any prefrosh LSMers lurking, I’m a class of 2017 LSM’er, so feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the program/registration/anything else.

Congrats on your acceptances. I’m a 2017 LSMer, so if you’ve got any questions feel free to message me, and I look forward to seeing you all next year!
