LSU, Univeristy of Arkansas, or Texas A&M?

I am about to be a senior in Louisiana. I have been torn between LSU, Univeristy of Arkansas, and Texas A&M. I have visited all of the colleges and have like all of them. Out of the three, I think I liked Texas A&M the best. I was dead set on it for the longest time because I loved the campus and I was considering becoming a biomedical engineer. But I have now reconsidered because I am unsure if I am adept enough in math to be an engineer. So now I would like to go to medical school, but I don't know if Texas A&M would be the best option anymore? Does anyone have any advice or opinion on which college would be the best choice?

The only in-state institution on your list is LSU. The other two may be completely unaffordable even if you are admitted. Until you have actually applied, been accepted, and have received your financial aid offers, there is no point in choosing between these three. Sit down with your parents and find out how much money they are ready, willing, and able to pay for your education, how they feel about you taking out college loans, and how much money they expect you to earn during the summers and the school year. That way you will know which (if any) of these are viable options for you.

I know many doctors who did their undergrad at Texas A&M. Just get good grades and prepare well for the MCAT. I don’t see what the appeal of Arkansas would be unless they gave you a lot of money. I would pick between LSU and A&M.

Have you asked your parents if they’ll pay the high OOS costs for UArk or TAMU? if they won’t then the question may be moot unless one of the schools gives you lots of merit money.

What are your test scores and GPA?

BTW…if you want to go to med school, then go to LSU, do your best, get a great MCAT, and then go to LSU’s med school…instate public SOMs are often your cheapest options.

Generally I do not suggest LSU. Based on what I know, LSU is not a very good school.
What LSU campus do you plan to go to?

A&M is generally much better than LSU and Arkansas when comparing Rankings, student body strength, rating of individual academic programs and is also seen as a top “bang for your buck” school.

That said, LSU or Arkansas won’t hold you back from any potential career/academic paths.

I think Texas A&M is a much better school than LSU or Arkansas.

^^

that may be, but if the student can’t afford those OOS publics, then LSU will do fine as a pre-med school. LSU does a fine job with STEM majors. Like many flagships, it offers a variety of majors ranging from demanding to less-demanding.

There’s really no reason to pay OOS costs for either TAMU or UArk if the goal is med school.

Arkansas does offer a generous discount for border states, including Louisiana -

As far as which would be the best school–I think successful students come from all of those schools. I know many doctors who attended our local LSU-Shreveport and then went on to medical school. My friend’s child attended the prestigious William and Mary but couldn’t get in to LSU Med School right off the bat.

As for the comment that LSU is not a good school…I did not graduate from there but my dad and my brother did and they both became successful lawyers worth millions so…

LSU’s presumably low price does make it attractive to a pre-med, since it would allow minimizing debt and/or saving money for expensive medical school.
