LSU vs FSU?

How would you compare the academics at each? Is either one significantly better than the other? I've narrowed down my college search to these two, and I was leaning towards LSU but I'm starting to second-guess myself.

At LSU, I'd be in the honors program; at FSU, I wouldn't.

Is there a difference in your costs?

With FSU I have in-state tuition plus Bright Futures, making total cost around $7,000 per year; With LSU I have out-of-state tuition, but a $10,000 scholarship, so total cost comes out to around $17,000 per year.

What do you want to major in?
FSU seems to be similar with LSU.

What would you and your family do with the approximately 40k that would be saved by attending FSU?

What are your parents saying? If they’ll happily pay the higher price at LSU, then fine. If they won’t, then the subject may be moot.

Not sure on a major yet, but I’m planning in being a pre-med student, so lots of science.

As for the financial situation, my family can swing the extra cost of LSU. It’s not a deciding factor.

If you go to FSU, will they offer the $40,000 toward your medical school if you get into medical school?

If I end up going to FSU, I wouldn’t want to go to FSU med school I don’t think; I’d like to experience a new state at at least some point of my life. That aside, I’d be very surprised if FSU offered me $40,000 to go towards medical school, but I guess it could happen.

By “they”, I meant your parents, not FSU.

Remember that pre-meds are lucky to be admitted to one medical school (about half of those who apply get shut out, and many more pre-meds do not even apply after realizing that it is futile after not getting high enough grades or MCAT score). So you should not be picky about medical school, but you should be aware that it can be expensive (especially other than in-state public ones), so any extra savings on undergraduate can help reduce medical school student loan debt later.

UCB is right. Getting accepted to ANY med school is a big deal. If you get accepted to one med school (even if it’s FSU), you’ll be grateful and go! You’ll likely apply to all of the Florida med schools and also apply to a few OOS (non-public) med schools.

As UCB clarified, he was asking if your PARENTS would put the $40k towards med school if you went to FSU for undergrad instead of LSU. Med school is very expensive, so reducing loans is important.

Some people have commented in other threads that Florida public medical schools have a relatively large amount of space for in-state applicants that they favor; you may want to consider whether going to LSU would affect your in-state status for the purpose of applying to Florida public medical schools (check the medical schools in question).

I agree with ucbalumnus.

If you attend a school OOS your residency status won’t change unless you’re an independent.

Now, without getting into your personal life I would recommend Florida State over LSU. I don’t have any facts or figures off hand, but I think FSU would offer you more in terms of research, volunteering and club activities than LSU would.

On the other hand…LSU honors may appeal to some adcom when it comes to apply to whatever grad school you choose. It’s always good to be an honors student.

Got it, I was a little confused with that question, I just figured I didn’t know about med schools offering money like that. To answer it though, I plan on paying for med (possibly dental) school myself. My parents have offered to help, but it’s been my decision to take it on myself. Circumstances may change in the next four years, but that’s the situation now.

Money really isn’t an influencing factor with this though, my cousin (who is a few years older and grew up in FL) went to LSU undergrad and med school, and was able to get instate tuition for the majority of the years. Not sure how, but we have lots of property in LA and I think they put something in his name. Point is, the same could be done for me.

The real question is, if given the option of going to FSU or LSU–money and med school application boost aside–which would you pick in terms of academic quality?

Less than 50% from LSU graduate so…it’s ur choice!

Not true-- LSU’s six year graduation rate is in the sixties. FSU’s four year is 49%.
