Luggage for semester in Denmark

My daughter will be studying in Denmark in the fall. The program has not made any luggage suggestions. I have read on-line that some schools recommend you take two checked bags of luggage rather than one large bag (would need to pay for the second bag). What do others recommend - one large bag or two? What about another bag when traveling during free time? Thank you.

My daughters did a semester and one a year. Both took the biggest Samsonite luggage we could get at TJ Maxx and a large backpack/carry on that served for quite a bit more storage. They also took a tote bag as a “purse” and put more in that. They tried to avoid the 2 suitcase scenario not just because of cost but also dragging both around.
Although it was tight, both got enough clothes/shoes for the semester and hit 50 on the button for weight. It can be done. ; )
Because it was Fall, one daughter put some socks, etc. in her carry-on coat pockets and made use of her space. For them it was fine, but when the daughter who was staying for the year, came home for Xmas, she did take a small one back with her after exchanging some summer clothes for winter.
This was one daughter’s carry-on and it was great.

She used that for long weekends, etc.

I’d suggest taking one larger wheelie suitcase (NB larger, not so-large-she-can’t-lift-it), plus some hand luggage. You don’t want to max out the weight limit (or the limits of what she can carry!) on the way there, as she will inevitably buy stuff out there and bring it back with her.

My S returned 3 weeks ago from his spring semester at DIS. Although he went from K-12 wearing only t-shirts and blue jeans, as a college student he has become somewhat of a clothes horse. He took two large suitcases, his backpack, and his laptop. Although it seemed like a lot of stuff, it was worth the extra money ($70 over and $100 return) to him. The one thing that he needed to buy there was a smaller bag for his travel weeks. For the return trip, he left the blue jeans that were pretty worn and put his laptop inside one of the larger bags. I am sure that he could have gotten by with just one large bag but he wanted his ski jacket and pants for a trip to Finland and his dad thought that he should take heavy hiking boots (he left those behind also). I am sure that there were other things that he packed that he could have done without but knowing how expensive things are in Denmark, he didn’t want to buy when he got there.

An interesting side note: during the five days that he was home before he went back to school for his summer internship, on his own, without any suggestion from me, he packed up 2 large bags of clothes to donate to Goodwill. He said that he had learned that he really didn’t need as much stuff as he had in the past.

Is your daughter doing DIS or another school?

My son is attending DIS in the Fall & this discussion is very beneficial as I view luggage on line…they are permitted to carry on a parka as well - correct? He will not be wearing it boarding his flight in Atlanta in August!

Mammadaff - did not know about the parka. Thank you.
