Luggage

International prefrosh here, can any current students give me advice on suitcases / duffel bags? I'm thinking of bringing two big suitcases for all my stuff, but I'm worried about where I would store them when I move into dorms. Should I bring a suitcase and a duffel bag / a smaller suitcase instead, at the risk of not being able to bring as much stuff, so that I have more space in my dorm room?

The office at Caltech told us that they do have some kind of storage, but the person did not have details. As an international student, I thought you had a different reception date?

Do you know if the storage is year-long storage that I could put something like my bags in, or did he not tell you anything else? And yes, international students have an earlier orientation a few days before the general orientation, a little over a week from now.

Hi Prefrosh–I look forward to meeting you in person  Anyway, you’ll have plenty of space to store everything you need, and you can purchase the rest on Amazon.com/Target (a few blocks away from campus). I highly suggest packing one suitcase with everything you would need to survive for a week so that you don’t need to unpack and then repack all of your stuff after rotation ends.

In regards to year long storage, there is a lot of space available in all of the houses for summer storage purposes (i.e. between academic years). During the school year, depending on the size of your bags, you may be able to stuff them in the closets available in each room or in a nifty spot between pieces of furniture. If you’re bringing oversized bags that cannot collapse, most houses tend to have some space for storing things like that, but you shouldn’t try to take up too much of it.

While you’re always free to post questions here on CC, I would highly suggest joining the Caltech Class of 2018 group for more diverse responses. Moreover, you get to meet your fellow Techers before you arrive!

Hi chewydog, thanks so much for the helpful answer! I think I’ve got a pretty good idea of what to do now. Also, I am in the Class of 2018 Facebook page, but I had asked a question just before and I thought I might as well just post here. In retrospect posting on the page might have been better :stuck_out_tongue: Thanks again!
