Lying about Activities

Hey everyone,

I'm the president of the Investment Club at my school. Recently, multiple have told me that they have written on their college apps that they were members of their club. I'm perceived as a pretty chill guy and I guess they assumed I wouldn't care. One example is one person who told me they wrote down they were a member Sophomore, Junior, and Senior year, despite attending no meetings. Another person told me they wrote down they were vice president of the club despite attending only one or two meetings last year.

To an extent, I understand why they are lying about this club on their applications. The club has been doing some amazing things the last two years, we've had famous speakers and interesting field trips. I'm sure it looks good on a college app.

I'm applying ED to Wharton, and I am very concerned that I am competing with some of these people for admission. I think my work as President will become diluted if people start applying to the same colleges as me and lying about being members of the club I've worked so hard on.

There should be no tolerance for dishonesty in the college application process, however I believe they will not be penalized. I have conveyed to them that I don't want them lying about the club on their applications. Other than that, what should/can I do?

Thanks in advance

td;lr: People lying about being members of club I run on college apps, what should I do?

It sucks but I don’t really think there’s anything you can do about it. :(

Talk to your GC. If you don’t want to rat out specific people, just casually hint at it, but make it clear that you don’t plan on doing it yourself lol.

I would tell your GC. They can help you decide what to do or if you should do anything (i would not mention names at first). however, the individual claiming to be vice president should especially be punished.

^Agreed

If some are competing for slots at the same private colleges as you (large public universities get more complicated, if they don’t include letters of recommendations), then perhaps your guidance counselor can make special note of the activity in your letter of recommendation and for any other actual members. Your applications will almost certainly be reviewed by the same admissions officers, since they are often assigned according to geographic region. The absence of any mention of the Investment Club in some letters should be a red flag.
