Say you apply to UPENN and you mark down computer science or something with less interest by applicants but you actually want to go to Wharton. My question is are you at a disadvantage or at an advantage for choosing a major with less people and possibly a better admittance rate or does it not affect your chances at all?

Well for such a case, if the person doesn't get into Wharton from CAS, then what? You have to transfer in...

Same with USC for film school: it's risky to go to USC as some other major and try to transfer into their film school.

If there are no transfer barriers, then the difference in admission probably isn't that great to begin with.

Taking your example, it would not be a good idea, the transfer is very difficult.

Just apply to the school you want to get into, especially if it's a competative school to get into. Just because you were accepted into another school, that doesn't mean it'll be easy to swtich schools. Then what? You'll be stuck with a major you don't want.

"Same with USC for film school: it's risky to go to USC as some other major and try to transfer into their film school."....Unless you want critical studies major....seems to be just a form to transfer from A&S to SCA for that (we happen to know number of students who have already done that this year....)
