Hello.
I am working on my UC personal statements (late...I know), but I am having a hard time deciding on what to write. I think I could write a compelling essay about wanting to become the first doctor in my family, but then I don't really know if I actually want to be the first doctor in my family. I'm pretty sure I want to major in Biology or BME, but probably not to be a doctor. Is it OK to write an essay about wanting to become a doctor?

I would say if you want to major in Biology or BME you should write about it. I don’t think one should write about what they are not actually interested in. You may find great topics to write about on your potential majors. :D

Do you want to do research? Nothing wrong with saying that.

Or you could write your essay about what fascinates you about the major.

Nobody wants to read yet another essay about becoming the first doctor in the family.

If you don’t want to be a doctor, don’t write about wanting to be a doctor. A dishonest essay will be both unethical and ineffective. You can write a much better essay if you’re genuine.

Also, I agree with spdf. Cliche.

Cliche topics are fine if they are well-written and extra-personal — but if your writing is insincere, I don’t think you’ll be able to overcome that hurdle. Write about something you feel more strongly about.
