I'm pretty much sure that African/American is the same as "Black" which is what is known as "Race". same goes for white/caucasian or Latino/Hispanic

really? you're referring to the "one drop rule" that white racists used to discriminate against black people?

Whites who live in africa are not african in ethnicity. or else everyone in the US would simply be american.

"really? you're referring to the "one drop rule" that white racists used to discriminate against black people?"

Tyler, I know what you're thinking && I'm thinking the same exact thing. LMFAO

Yes Tyler, that was the original intent of the rule. But it has since become quite common for black people to accept other people with one drop of black in them as black. Growing up I have always heard black people say that if you have one drop of black in you, then you're black. There was actually an article written in TIME magazine where this issue was discussed. The author wrote that what racist whites used to exclude others is not used by blacks for inclusion purposes. Think about Halle Berry, Barack Obama and Tiger Woods. I, and every black person I know, consider them black. A lot of people regard Halle Berry as the first black women to win the oscar for Best Actress.

ummmm I think of it as another race

Think about it like Ice Cream

What does Vanilla + Chocolate make? NOt chocolate again right?
It makes probably butter scotch or something else. So just because you have a drop of black in you doesn't mean you're black. Literally, yes but don't come off sounding ambiguous because you're not only black, you're another race too.

In matter fact, you're Mixed....How about we leave it like that? Not Black, Not white, but mixed

&& remember Black and White doesn't make Black again. It actually makes Brown
See the comparison?

I meant, is "now used by blacks for inclusion purposes."

So Authentic, yes they are biracial, but if a biracial person grows up in the black community or a black households, then they have every right to identify most with their black side, so they can put that on their application.

And vanilla and chocolate ice cream don't mix to make butterscotch...

hotpiece is right, even though some people have just one drop of black in them, they are considered Black. And it was not Black people that upheld this perception as it was made by white racists. Even today most people view things as such. Look at Mariah Carey she is only a 1/4 black and she looks as white as Britney, but she is still considered a Black woman. The only exception I can think of is Nicole Richie though.

"Look at Mariah Carey she is only a 1/4 black and she looks as white as Britney, but she is still considered a Black woman"

1) I don't get how you was able to arrive at that amount....1/4?

2) && What the ****? Mariah Carey looks nothing like Britney Spears LOL, but anyway thats not the point.

saying someone is African/American only when they are Mixed seems like you're kind of abandoning you're white or I should say "Caucasian" side

Nicole Richie was adopted by Lionel Richie. And her father is actually hispanic. I'm not sure about her mother, but I'm pretty sure Nicole Richie is hispanic, not black.

I know her father was a member of Lionel Richie's group, but I don't know who...no wait that's just a rumor his name does sound Hispanic though

And I never said Mariah Carey looks like Britney, I said she looks as white as Britney. Again fix your reading comprehension. It all depends on what the person identifies with.

Okay So Authentic,

Mariah Carey is 1/4 white if one parent was biracial (black and white) and the other was white.

Mariah Carey is as light as Britney Spears, in terms of skin tone, not a similarity between their looks.

Firstly, it's AFRICAN AMERICAN. There is no slash in between African and American. Secondly, my cousins are biracial (black and white). White people have never accepted them but black people have. So, they consider themselves to be black. Did they abandon their white half? Maybe, but why would they want to identify with a race that has ostracized them since childhood. I think they have every right to decide whether or not they want to "abandon" a part of their heritage. It's their life and it's their decision.

A race that has ostracized other races since the beginning of time...

Just the same way they have every right to put down whatever race or ethnicity they want in a college application. its their prerogative and they shouldn't be penolized for it

right, though... I don't blame them at all for supposedly "choosing" their black side over their white side.

If they are biracial, then they have every right to put down African American/Black or Caucasian. But, if you are some random white kid looking for an admissions boost, then you can be PENALIZED for it, because it's lying!

It cannot possibly be lying if the question asks what do you think rather than what are you. i mean yeah, its unethical if thats the caucasian intention but still...

"I don't blame them at all for supposedly "choosing" their black side over their white side."

ummm justify that please^

because it's not like white people have a history of being accepting. And this is fact. That's what she was trying to say.

It is lying and I've already explained why numerous times, so I'm not going to again.

ummm justify that please^
Are you serious? Historically white people have been the most barbaric and exclusionary race. They have single-handedly oppressed nearly every other minority group in the world.

TrackBabi, I'm really starting to think that So Authentic is a troll...

how could they when they were perceived as the dominant ones. you can't possibly accept the ones considered tyrant because they were known to run society back then
