So what's the point of bringing it up? It has nothing to do with the topic. History is history and just because your ancestor or just someone from your race committed a crime or whatever, what's that got to do with you?

thats why I don't understand why some people would side just being black alone and abandon their other side.

I only brought it up in response to So Authentic. I originally wrote that if my cousins decided to abandon their white half, then I wouldn't blame them. So Authentic wanted a justification and I gave him one. In retrospect, he was probably just flame-baiting.

bottom Line:
Put what you are one the application regardless of who colleges favor!

[case closed!]

"And, no one said that Europeans were so evil because they were white."

You chose to say that whites (not Europeans, or Americans/Australians/whatever for that matter) were historically the most oppressive, so you unnecessarily made it about race.

Was added as an edit, so not sure if you saw it.

"I originally wrote that if my cousins decided to abandon their white half, then I wouldn't blame them."

But that's one of the things that bothers, me, if you don't want to be treated in a racist way, you have to do the same to other people (ack, this is sounding like the do on to others crap)

Well, whites are descendents of Europeans. But, whatever.

How is deciding that they are African American being racist?

I don't see any problem with embracing one side more than the other, but, I dunno, maybe I'm the only one who sees "then I wouldn't blame them." as saying that you'd support someone wanting to distance themselves from being half white because you view white people in a negative light (like because of the history of evilness.)

I think you are taking what hotpiece said on this issue out of context. She spoke about her cousins (post 51) http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=376926&page=4
who are bi-racial and grew up not being accepted by the white community, but accepted by the black community and self-identifying qs being african americans because that has been their experience. She then went on to question whether or not her cousins abandoned their "white half' (not idenitfying with being bi-racial or half white & half black) because of the manner in which they were treated. Hotpiece stated that she did not know whether or not her cousins did. She did not state that she agreed or disagreed but it was her cousins right to live their lives as they felt they needed to.

A lot of people regard Halle Berry as the first black women to win the oscar for Best Actress.
Although halle berry is biracial, she has always identified herself as being a black woman and has made this statment publicly for many years. In her oscar acceptance speech, she thanked a number of black actresses who she said paved the way for her.

This moment is so much bigger than me. This moment is for Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Diahann Carroll. It's for the women that stand beside me, Jada Pinkett, Angela Bassett, Vivica Fox. And it's for every nameless, faceless woman of color that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened. Thank you. I'm so honored. I'm so honored. And I thank the Academy for choosing me to be the vessel for which His blessing might flow. Thank you.

From Barack Obama's own website:
He went on to earn his law degree from Harvard in 1991, where he became the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. Soon after, he returned to Chicago to practice as a civil rights lawyer and teach constitutional law. Finally, his advocacy work led him to run for the Illinois State Senate, where he served for eight years. In 2004, he became the third African American since Reconstruction to be elected to the U.S. Senate.

Sounds like he identifies with beign african american.

Ah, I see, sorry, my bad, I did take that out of context. Thanks for the clarification, sybbie719.

Yeah sybbie. That was my point. Many people who are biracial identify themselves as African American. And black people will accept them even if they are half-white.

no problem. if only everything else could be worked though so easily ;)

I don't view white people in a negative light.

hahaha, my bad Charisma, i didn't see your other post.

Its all just a stupid prestige thingie. All colleges say they are all about diversity, but really they just want money, and they want more kids to apply because of the diversity.

i'm argentinian, does anyone think that this can give me a plus frobeing aadmitted?

Charisma, I think my points were made clear to you by hotpiece and sybbie. Like hotpiece said there is a chance Black people could have done the same thing but they didn't so that doesn't take the blame from white people. And I say white people and not Australians or white Americans or whatever because they are all white. Individually, even, there are terrible things they have done to other groups of people in the world.

for the love of god, please let this thread die.

wow, charisma, you dissected that thing like I've never seen. Although I thought everyone generally made some valid points, I have to agree with you most about getting over the "white is racism" thing. I mean, that has got to be one of the most hypocritical things I've ever seen written. "Do unto others as you would like others to do unto you." If you don't like racist comments, don't make them. That's my two cents worth. Anyone want to bet on how many minutes it takes for someone to write back, re-quoting an earlier post and saying how they never claimed the white race to be evil? Besides, can't we FOR ONCE not turn a simple question about ethnicity into an A) history lesson B) race vs. race argument and C) quote-flying, ethnicity siding, 'I'm right-your wrong", ancestry excavating, WAR?

Can't we all just get along?

oh yeah, one more question though: "Individually, even, there are terrible things they (white people) have done to other groups of people in the world."

So what about the genocides in Rwanda and the Sudan? Darfur? These are horrible acts, and they are not done by a certain ethnic group that has been made out to sound so horrible on this thread. Now, I really don't want to start a racial argument by any means, so please don't do it. Slavery was bad. MLK Jr. was great. But no race is responsible for all the misery in the world.
