i guess i am a bit naive...i don't know, lately i have been hearing people saying that lots of people lie on CC...my question is, why would people do that anyway? what would that accomplish?

It's an ego thing... lots of people on here have real stats which are amazing so students like me, who have a mere 1300, might feel intimidated to share their real stats. I, for one, have no problem telling my stats because if I inflate them then the recs that I receive aren't accurate... plus why should I be ashamed of my stats? I have others which even my low scores out.

the only normal reason i can see for lying here is if you started posting as an underclassman and when you finally took your tests, did much worse than you thought you would. you've already been on these boards for months so you know how high everyone here scores, but you're embarassed to post your scores. even that's pretty lame. ive never lied about school related stuff here and never about anything else that matters.

ok...dees ppl are the future. Also..some people here are freshmans who THINK they are going to do so well..but later don't. hilarious. don't worry, half these stats are bogus. LIke our valedictorian looks like a joke compared to the "average" CCer

No one is going to PM you and ask why you didn't post your June 4th SAT/SAT 2 scores. You don't know any of these people in real life so why sweat about what they think??? If you are worried about what people in the internet think about you, then you got some life issues to deal with. Besides, most people only degrade other posters on this site because they are jealous of them; he/she has a near-perfect application lined up and envious users on this site try to find faults in it. Geez...

i agree. and i wonder the same thing, like that native alaskan 1600x2. ahaha.. that one just clearly was asking for attention, while others... i dont know.

CC = Barron's. comparing myself with these scores (real and bogus) probably give me a realistic baseline.

i didn't know people lied on CC!! well i don't lie. I feel good sharing my CR 470. Yes. 470.

Hahahaha maybe people lie to get praised. Like, "omg you are SO going to get in to Harvard because you're fabulous and wonderful and so smart"

I tell my PARENTS my school exam scores when i get 90% to get told I'm fab hahha.. but that's only to my parents. Why would anyone do that on a website... and try to get praised by strangers.

It's pretty simple; from where I see it, there are 3 reasons why someone will lie:

To make others FEEL bad, because they themselves are feeling like crap after reading others' successes.

To make themselves feel better, by hearing "Oh you have a chance" statements from intelligent people (I'm not kidding, CC has some of the smartest kids from around the nation).

To see if they did such and such activities, how their chances might turn out. For example, they will get two sn's, make one post with simialr stats and add a certain EC, while the other has another EC. Then they compare the replies.

Ok, its freaky, but I've been looking at which are lie posts, and some are pretty much OBVIOUS, (*hint SAT twice, both 1600's and president of about 10 clubs, 21 APs...YEAH RIGHT) but some are a little hard to pick out. Category #1 is usually the easiest to see, while category 3 is a little bit harder.

I'm a dork...:)

But I say, WOOT for CC's "lie-patrol"..lol. I know who these people are, and we catch trolls pretty fast.

I heard from a friend that one of the valedictorians from my school posts on CC. From what I've heard, he got 1590 on the old sat, 4.0uw, 11 APs and got accepted to MIT. If he posts his real states, some people might think he's lying. I realy don't think there are as many liars as you think on CC. What's the point og lying anyways? No one knows you anyways so you won't get embarrassed. You can always get a new account and start over anytime if you really want to, no one's going to hunt you down.

That's why I always read the number of post each person has to see if their credible.
Not a fan of the lying, but it does motivate me to do even better because you see tough competition.

You see the type of people you're competing with on C, and I think that's the important part. Because comparing yourself to others from your school gives you nothing.

let's just say that without my exposure to CC, I would NOT be where i am today...so thanx!!! :)

i love it when ppl get caught in lies, as in like contradictory posts. its great!

I never got why lying on CC would really help, because you're giving false stats, which leads to college recommendations that don't really make sense.

Plus, it's not like the CC'ers really care all that much if you scored somewhat low on a PSAT or SAT.

I'm with taffy, when you see people on here with these numbers you can't even count to, it helps to motivate, even if it is pure crap...

Do you guys remember a while back in one of the other forums where this kid said he was going to be skipping highschool and going directly to college? I'm not quite sure what I made of that... on one hand it seemed so unrealistic that someone would want to skip hs, but on the other it he kept at the entire thread for months....

People lie on these forums because they are desperate. Seriously, if was choosing between 2 EC's, and was so confused I came to ask here at CC, I would just say:

"Should I do Model UN or should I do Math Club?"

Done.

Doesn't require rocket science, just some courage. 50% of the people here don't actually hit the books. They just ask some questions and act like they are smart, and then either lie or whine. In the end, either hit the books, or don't complain.

No, I don’t lie. I’m sour, bitter, hairy, round and yellow to the eye.

Love your user name.

Okay, getting back on track.

The lying thing is pretty useless and unless the person posting has some big self-esteem issues I don’t see why they would lie. Then again, I guess there might be the chance that they want to live in a fantasy world they make themselves believe is true.

Just realize that telling serious lies on CC can lead you into telling lies in other parts of your life . I would tell the truth ,and learn from others ’ experience .
