Is it possible to lie about clubs on your college applications? is there any way colleges can find out? Do many people do this? I'm not considering this. I was just wondering because some of my senior friends were putting many clubs on their applications and im sure they havent been a part of them. Could they get in trouble? How do colleges verify that everything on an application is correct?

The odds are that the colleges will not check up, and the students will get away with it. If a student is found to have lied on an application, though, the acceptance can be rescinded. Minor exaggerations will seldom make a difference, one way or another. Major falsehoods are much likelier to be discovered. Many large, public universities do not include teacher or counselor recommendations, but some will conduct random checks. Colleges that do ask for letters of recommendation might get curious about an impressive listed activity that a guidance counselor doesn’t mention. It’s very easy to check whether or not a student is Class President or starting Varsity Quarterback. It’s a little more difficult to check whether an applicant has taken as many years of Ballet, piano, or Tae Kwan Do, as he or she has declared on the application. The basic rule is: “DON’T.” It will rarely make enough of a difference to be worth the risk.

Yes, they could be expelled from the college if it was found they lied on their applications.

How are you sure they weren’t a part of the clubs? Were you a part of the clubs?

Some people will be “grazers” and show up for a few meetings and feel that it is fine to put the club on their resume.

Lots of threads like this on CC. Even if they don’t get caught lying on their application, they’ll get dependent on lying and one day they will get caught.
