Lying on the App?!

Hey,

I'm a senior and i am starting to look at the layout and format of the college applications.
I noticed in the Wisconsin Application that the Extracurricular Activies and Job Experience parts are set up really vague and they dont ask for refrences, hours, signatures or tax ids. As a volunteer in like 3 different hospitals, nursing homes and veterans homes, i feel bad because it looks like anybody can put down anything and get away with it. Am i wrong?

i suppose you can put down anything you want. but if you would be caught submitting false information....well, that alone should be deterrent enough, shouldn't it?

It definitely should but there is ZERO chance to get caught if you don't put down the company name, tax id, hospital name, PHONE NUMBERS, etc... (I will be forced to put the phone numbers in the descriptions category).

The truth is that you can pretty much lie about a lot of stuff in your resumes. Even if you do put down a name and phone number and whatnot of a hospital, think about the sheer number of applicants the colleges receive. Would it seem plausible that schools go around calling and verifying some 15000 hospitals and applicants? They will only do a background check on you if your resume 'stands out' (too good to be true?) among everyone else's.

But still, you never know. And if you're caught lying, you're screwed in 17363 different ways. It is up to them to take the risk.

i'm thinking the same thing. so then would it be good to include reference letters indicating hours from volunteer organizations?

I am going to include a refrence letter for my biggest extracurrics. One more question: I interned 1 summer in a technology company and worked another year in a relative's medical office but i didn't file any tax returns or whatever it is you have to fill out. Should i still put those two things under the employment catagory?

I think the reference letters would be a good idea...good way to confirm...

I'm worried about my community service, because I haven't done much of it and I didn't keep good track. I think I might leave some things off because I'm not sure of the hours and I definitely do NOT want get it wrong...or look like I'm making it up or something...I could call and ask what hours I worked because I did sign in, but I'm not really sure it matters that much.

JimShaw, those sound like they took up a lot of your time....perhaps you could get a letter about them or something? It would be a shame to leave them off of the application, I think.

seole, i think a minor or even a major exaggeration on hours on the community service part won't be a big deal. Considering that they don't even ask for details about the job location, it is clear that they don't care about the details, only the big picture.

Thanks, I think i might get the letter for the jobs but i really want to include them under the employment category.
