Lyon Center (Gym)

i couldn't find a clear answer on the website or anywhere else...for undergrads, is use of all the Lyon Center facilities free?

Yeah. They have some exercise classes that cost money, but other than that you can use all the stuff in the gym (I.E. weights, treadmill, etc)

It still isn't the greatest facility and there's a reason it isn't on the campus tour route. I think it's cramped and overcrowded. Hopefully the new gym included in the student center (opening 2010?) will be an improvement.

depends on when your Work Out…early mornings are best if you like to work out for longer than hour and like to use the equipment you want

Lyon Center isn’t the greatest but its what it is

I usually go in the morning since there aren't many people and relatively all the machines and weights are free. The facilities are free and I think a lot of people would complain if they weren't. I do wish they put the weight room in a bigger room so that there could be a wider accommodation of more weights, benches, machines, etc. in the room. That would decrease conjestion by a lot. Never go to the gym at 2PM or later...it will be packed.

is there a rock climbing wall?

How's the swimming pool?

Got a lot smaller last month. Not really sure what they are doing to it, but the larger pool was drained and they seem to be tearing out the concrete.

where is the closest ice rink?

There's an ice rink in culver city which isn't too far away. I went there once with friends and it was pretty fun.

there's a rock climbing wall, but it's not the harness kind. it's a pretty short free climbing wall

is there public transportation to the ice rink?

I'm sure there are buses that go to culver city, you would probably have to connect. its also a directly across town on the freeway. In the winter time, Pershing Square (somewhat of a landmark in downtown LA, and only a few minutes from 'SC) turns into an ice rink.

So in short.. it kind of sucks? (<- or not great) dang i really like pools so i was hoping it would be huge or something... ;_; well there's the beach! How far away is that again? (and the mountain for skiing?)

My first thought after reading the words "Lyon Center" was "SUCKS."

That should be self-explanatory - the Lyon Center is the embarrasment of the campus... For a school with an endowment over $2.6 billion and 16000 undergrads, the rec center is a piece of s.

The indoor swimming pool in PED is fairly nice, but it's only free the first time, and then you have to pay a small fee. Also, it's only open about 2 hours a day. The beach and mountains are nearby and good options for weekends.

Does USC have any sort of GNC-like store where you can use leftover money from your meal plan? I plan on getting the trojan meal plan so I can go to all the 3rd party vendors, and a place to get stuff like powerbars or protein powder would be nice... so ya, if they don't have a store like that who would you suggest i petition to instate one?
