Lyres in Pit during Marching Band

Hi, I'm a flute player at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. I'm physically unable to march in the marching band this season (which devastates me, I love it). They're putting me in the pit. I didn't know if I'd need a lyre, since it's on the requirement form. I'll probably be doing different pit instruments, like marimba and stuff. What would I need?? Thanks so much!!

I’m don’t know if companies necessarily make lyres for front ensemble (but if they do, that’s cool). It probably wouldn’t hurt to get a foldable music stand, since as a member of the pit you will be playing while stationary, in which case you can just have the music stand right in front of you. =) However, it probably wouldn’t hurt to contact the director or the percussion/front ensemble tech to ask exactly what you need. =) That’s what I recommend the most.

It probably wouldn’t hurt to get your own pair of mallets (but it would be unwise to get them before you know which instruments you will be playing for sure, since there are various mallets for different instruments). Again, it would be good to contact the director/front ensemble tech.

I’m just a percussionist in high school, so I hope that I was able to sort of help…maybe. Best of luck to you in pit! It is a really amazing (and different) experience; have fun. =)
