Ok, so I've been offered one of twenty research positions in the Summer Program in Biomedical Sciences at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. This program is basically a full-time research job for nine months, five days a week, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

However, I am slightly hesitating to accept this position, as it will take up almost my entire summer before my first year at college. I really wanted to use this summer to get a job, possibly intern, and relax a bit before starting college. BUT, this offer also seems like a wonderful research opportunity, as it is a fairly selective program.

Will this research help me for admission into medical school, even though its specifically called a "High School Summer Program" in Biomedical Sciences? Will I mention this in my med school apps in the future? Also, will it be easier for me to acquire future research postions in college if I attend a summer program like this?

AHHHHHHHH! I hate you!!! hehe, joking. I got rejected on that, but I suggest you go cause if you're going to into medicine, you're going to have to do research sooner or later. Make connections in MD Anderson!!!

P.S.

I think it's two months and $2000 in living stipend

I've always wanted to do a summer research program, but the one summer program that i applied to i never heard from, becuase one of my teachers never sent in the rec. Other people had the same problem with getting recs from her (That's ok, I still love her!)

One of my friends did research at M.D. Anderson last summer; it worked out really great for him. I'm sure that it helped him get into the bunches of colleges that he got into. He also used it for his IB EE topic.

That being said, he did it the summer before his senior year, and you'll be doing this the summer before your college year. If I were you, I'd take the research despite that. I'm sure that you can relax there too. And if it's only 2 months, you'll still have time to relax. It's a great opportunity!

Will this program require you to travel anywhere, or is it close to your house?

I'll be doing a lot of volunteering this summer, and hopefully an internship with a dermatologist...need to call him. Fun stuff!

Thanks for posting auroral corona! I actually live about 45 minutes away from Houston, so it won't be too far away at all. However, they are providing me summer housing at the nearby Rice University so that I don't have to commute back and forth everyday, so I guess it won't be that bad. I'm actually getting really excited about participating in a program like this. It just feels as if I'm leaving for college two months earlier though, but I'm sure it will be a rewarding experience.

Hi college Kidd I need help about the MD anderson summer program. I like to have your suggestion in preparing the documents for my application to the MD anderson summer program .

how many people do you think apply to this program? also, were you allowed to attach separate sheets to the application because on the extracurricular activities question, it gives like two lines…

Though this is a bit late, collegekid, I’ve been accepted into the same program and I actually have the same doubts: the program consuming my whole summer, not being able to chill with friends, etc. What did you eventually decide to do and how did it work out for you? Thanks for your help :)

Hello, I’m also planning on applying to this program and have the same question as collegekid. Does anyone have additional input? Thanks for your help :D

Did you get a rejection e-mail/letter? I haven’t gotten any notification yet, but I know someone who apparently got his acceptance e-mail a couple of days ago. Hmm…I wonder if MD Anderson even got my application ■■■
