M. Eng.

do people getting a masters in engineering generally stay for a 5th year, or do they use a combination of advanced placement and extra courses and do it within the usual 4 years? And do they get their BS and M. Eng degrees at the same time, or do they participate in consecutive commencement ceremonies?

Mostly people do it in five years. I know people who have done it in four years, though, so it's not unheard of (or impossible).

I just looked in my commencement program, and there were 89 course 6 MEng degrees awarded last year; 15 of those degrees were awarded simultaneously with SB degrees. So most people march with their undergrad class to receive their bachelor's degrees -- graduation is a bigger deal after undergrad anyway. :)

A bigger deal? Really? I don't know anything but somehow I got the feeling that Ph.D.'s regarded it as more of a formality, especially since when graduating many of them are essentially already at their first postdoc or faculty job. I'm glad to be wrong. I like ceremony :)

Haha, no, that's what I mean! That undergrad graduation (graduation upon completion of an SB) is a bigger deal than graduation upon completion of a graduate degree.

Several of the MEng kids I know didn't even march for their MEngs, for which I cannot particularly blame them.

Sorry to disappoint. :) But you can get excited about getting your PhD, even if everybody else is being lame!

Hahaha. I'll just excited about my bachlor's, I spose. I'm good at misreading things in convenient ways.
