I know that ND's male-to-female student body ratio is about 52-48 which generally runs contrary to most schools these days - in fact I'm not sure I know of a major university that has more men than women. In some places the number of women significantly exceeds the men.

Does anyone know why the opposite is true at ND?

Is it by design? Or are there simply more male applicants than female? Or is it because they have only so many dorm facilities suitable for women and only so many suitable for men? Or some other reason?

15 men’s dorms, 14 women’s

And then, there are the 5 women’s dorms at St. Marys across the way. :)

So how about the applicant pool. Is it similar to other colleges these days - heavily weighted toward women applicants? Which means (as it does now at most places) that its proportinately or statistically-speaking “easier” for a guy to get in than a girl?

Based on the Common Data Set from last year, 8319 and 8229 men and women, respectively, applied and 2085 and 1934, men and women, respectively, were admitted. I’m sure someone could do a more in depth analysis over multiple years.

Thanks mwmomof5. Those Common Data Sets are very helpful. I’d heard of them but didn’t know what they were.
