Ma 8 Problem Solving in Calculus (3-0-0)

Any advice on the worthiness of taking this class?
Thanks.

For the math calculus diagnostic results, you had one of three outcomes (unless there are others I am not aware of).

If you scored low, you were put into Math 1a Section 1 (which also necessitates that you take Math 1d later in the year).
If you scored semi-low, not great but not too bad, you were put into Math 1a but you were asked to take Ma 8 to improve your problem solving skills.
If you scored well, you were just put into Math 1a.

For that reason, I would imagine that Ma 8 is sort like an extra help class to improve problem solving skills. If yours are good, I'm not sure that I would worry about taking it.

Of course, I am just a lowly prefrosh and don't know much, so if anyone else has a more accurate point of view please interject.

I heard that it was a useful class but I didn't take Ma 1a so I'm sure somebody else will come along with something more useful to say.

.... and if you scored REALLY low, they might even withdraw their offer of admission.

Are you being facetious my friend?

I'm not so sure about that. Every year there are some prefrosh who neglect to take some or all of the diagnostic tests. They don't get kicked out.

lizzardfire, yes, he's being facetious

I recommend it, especially if you've not done a lot of work with proofs. It helps to get your head around things, it's not too difficult, and you can always drop it if it's not useful to you.

Amen with what Craig said. Give Ma8 a try. And you don't even need to score "not great" to be recommended for Ma8. The math placement exam tests on different aspects of calculus. If you miss too many points in any particular aspect (which will happen if you get a question wrong), you're recommended for Ma8. Don't worry about it, it happens to a lot of people (myself included!). Give the class a try and see what you think about it!

Math 8 is basically a cheat sheet for Math 1a. Definitely take it.
