Wondering if anyone has heard from either NYU or Columbia for Masters in Arts Administration. Not much on here from this year.

Doesn’t seem to be too many people interested in this on this board, but I did look at both…my understanding is that those two have really excellent programs for arts admin and supposedly Columbia’s is the “best”…I heard from a friend who visited Columbia thought it was way too NYC-centric and he didn’t care for the atmosphere…he liked NYU better but be advised that for NYU they are looking for people who have a background in the arts (dancer, musician, artist, theater, etc). I don’t have that kind of a background, in any significant capacity so I don’t know that I will apply to NYU’s program.

You should also consider CMU’s program, which is very quantitative compared to other programs. UW-Madison has a program that is funded and also well-regarded. Yale has a program in theater management/admin so that is also an option.

All these programs are different but it just depends on what you want to do and where you want to be.

Good luck and I wish you the best…I won’t be applying for a few years because I just finished my other masters and want to work for a while and build up my contacts and experience in the arts via volunteer and revisiting my creative nature. Shoot me a message if you want to talk some more about it!

Rejected by Columbia via email 4-2-10.

Sorry to hear that! Did you only apply to these two places or do you have some other options?

Hey Artysgirl. Thanks for the condolences. I did indeed apply to several other places and have been accepted to several other programs, including CMU. I’m actually not super disappointed with the Columbia rejection as I was leery of the hefty price-tag anyway. The only school I’m still waiting on is NYU. Can’t believe they haven’t gotten back to me yet. Pretty poor performance on their part. I understand they’ve been inundated with apps this year but 10 weeks is plenty of time to make a decision. I’ll keep you posted. Good luck in your future endeavors.

artsguy, have you heard back from steinhardt? I got waitlisted at columbia and accepted at steinhardt. I also applied/was accepted to NYU Wagner’s MPA in public/non-profit management and policy. Debating the 2 but will likely end up at steinhardt.

Congrats, stoutart! I’ve love to keep in touch and see how you are doing! I’m a ways off until I can apply because I’m still gaining nonprofit arts experience, but I am very curious to see how you end up liking your program. That goes for you too, artsguy! Stout, what are some of the things you liked about steinhardt vs wagner? Are you from NYC? Do you already have an arts or (arts/nonporfit) management background?

hi guys.
i just came across this thread and I am currently applying to NYU Steinheadt and was wondering if you guys had any advise for the personal statement part. I do not have a background in arts management or administration but mainly performance so I can’t really speak from that perspective as I have a BA in the Acting from a English drama school and have done a extensive resume in acting but looking to transition and don’t really know how to go about expressing my experience and future goals! Did anyone have a similar background? Any advise?

Hello,
I plan to study Arts management in USA. Would u like to give me more advice about this major. I’m really curious about the detailed differences between these schools. Do you know about this program in Boston University?

I like this program in CMU. The curriculum there focus more on management, I think. What’s more, they have a more closed relation to technology. So, would you mind sharing your application experience with me? How u have successfully get the offer from CMU, which is my dream school. I’m here looking forward to your reply. Ur suggestion is really important to me!
Thanks a lot!

Hello! I wanted to bump up this thread and see if anyone has some more insight into the world of graduate studies in arts management/administration/education. I’m currently working in performing arts education and want to pursue a masters in the near future (next two years or so). I’m currently debating whether I should do a general arts management degree, an arts education focused degree, or a more interdisciplinary degree that draws from psychology and sociology etc.

So, I guess I have a few concerns that I’m trying to work out. I’m worried that an arts administration degree will be a little to business oriented for me. My interests are more in curriculum design and education programming, which pulls me toward the more education oriented degrees. However, I’m wondering if organizations would look more highly upon the management skills of the arts administration/management degrees (marketing, fundraising, finance/accounting mumbojumbo etc).

I’m looking into the programs at Columbia, NYU, CMU, and BU for arts admin; Harvard’s Arts in Education program; and a few programs abroad like University of Edinburgh’s Music in the Community program.

Thoughts? Advice? Critiques?

I’m bumping this thread up because I finally applied. I am working on a non-profit startup that isn’t arts related, but my ultimate goal is managing a theater so I applied to a few MBA programs that have good reputations in non-profit and social enterprise. Two programs are especially good for aspiring arts managers but they also give you general management education. My top choice is Yale MBA/MFA theater management and then Wisconsin-Madison MBA arts administration concentration. I also applied to NYU and Berkley. All difficult schools, but I thought now is a good time to apply. I’ve been working for two years and doing arts-related and non-profit stuff on the side…keeping my fingers crossed. Good luck to the rest of you pursuing this. I’m still in the pre-admission stage, but I will say that I researched programs for a couple of years, spoke with students at some, visited one I was interested in and attended an admissions event for another. Do your research, talk to people, figure out exactly what you want and then go for it. Make sure that what you do outside of work also shows a commitment to the arts if that’s what you want to do, especially if your professional and educational background is not in the arts (like mine). Good luck!

Hi, everyone! Gracious, I wish I had found this thread six months ago… It would have come in handy! Like most of you, I am interested in arts administration. I am a little more focused on the education side of things, which is why I applied to the Harvard Arts in Education program and the GWU museum education program… Eeeep! I really liked the Columbia arts admin program, but I was told the program was aimed at folks who have been working for a few years already (and I’m fresh out of undergrad, 2012 yeahhh). The American University arts management program looked great too but I discovered it too late! I’m happy with my programs though. Fingers crossed!
