I have always heard that Australia universities have high regarded linguistics programs but I never relaly thought about it....now I am considering tossing it into my pot of potential destinations for grad school......however, I am not that familar with their universities.

Anyone familiar with their universities and know which has great Linguistics programs? I could then go from there by looking at those particular programs!

Hiya! Im a second year science student from sydney, and would be glad to answer any questions u have about australian universities.

Now, I know that Macquarie University in Sydney has a good reputation for languages, as does UNSW and Sydney uni. RMIT and Melbourne unis have a VERY good reputations, but I dont know specifically about linguistics, and ANU (Australian National University) has been voted the top university in the country, but is in a very boring place (Canberra, the capital, very small).

Feel free to email me if u have any questions :)

Parisienne!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What's it like in Australia? hoes the cost of living? Is it easy for international student sto find housing if they want to live alone? Hows financial aid for internationals? Does it even exist? Is the application process similar to that of the US? Do they require the GRE?

Wow. OK, um

Cost of living in Sydney
Housing (shared flat in the city/uni area): 130-250 AUD pw
Food: approx 90 pw
extras (mobile, movies etc): im gonna say 20 pw

If you want to live alone you might consider getting an apartment or room in a dorm rented by the university, b/c (& especially in sydney) its DAMN expensive to live on your own independant of the university. maybe $300+ pw on rent alone??

As far as I know, especially for masters degrees, there is no fin aid for internationals. You guys have to pay a higher rate i think (maybe 15K?) For PhD (from sydney uni) "The University administers an International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) scheme; information regarding the annual application round is posted on the International Office web pages in May. Applications close at the end of August"

Um, i dont think its at all like the US process. Im speaking about locals (AUS citizens) here b/c thats the information i can find, but we dont have to have letters of recommendation or tests or anything like that. You just fill in the form and supply a transcript and thats it (as far as I can tell). But cos you're international, you might have to do more :)

GRE not needed (but might make an impression). Again from Sydney Uni, MA Applied linguistics:
"An applicant for admission to candidature shall be a Bachelor of Arts of The University of Sydney or equivalent and have completed a three year sequence (undergraduate major) in a relevant subject area at a standard acceptable to the Faculty", which means about 3.0 on your scale??

Mind, universities here are a lot different to those in the US in subtle ways. Nobody lives in campus- most undergrads (and im talking like 98% of local students) dont move near the campus like in america. Uni is a progression of high school, rather than a life change. Masters degrees (by coursework) are one year, by research two. PhDs three years. Also take into consideration the school year here in the southern hemisphere goes from march-dec (its summer right now, about 6.30 pm and 25 degrees C), but some unis might start their degrees in sem 2 (aug/end july), i know sydney uni does. or you can take a semester off then come :)

Where are you from? What uni do you go to? What do you want to do with your degree? What other unis are you considering in america? when do you want to apply?

Try http://www.thegoodguides.com.au, which publishes two books that you can buy in newsagents, and ranks all the universities, gives you info on them and on all their departments :)

Where are you from? Georgia

What uni do you go to? Pitt

What do you want to do with your degree? Not exactly sure, but I know I do not want to teach. I have many interests.

What other unis are you considering in america? Considering many, though I won't have anything finalized untill I actually start applications. Here are some on my list at the moment: Washington, Indiana, UGA, Penn, Cornell, McGill and Toronto (Canada), Oregon, IL-Urbana Champaign, Delaware.

when do you want to apply? Woudl be applying in the fall of 2006 for a fall 2007 entry.
