same question here. need to know a good teacher to take this with… im not a moron, but damn calculus sucks.

Take them seperate in the same semester if you are an engineering, physics or math major. That way you are sure to take a base in vectors, dot product, and polar coordinates, which are all very important and will make your future lower division math classes easier. You will do Polar again in Calc 2, You will see vectors in Calc 3, Physics, and Linear algebra. The dot product is everywhere. If math isn’t important to your major, take 1147 and get it done with. Who cares what they ommit.

BTW, I passed Calculus I with an A, getting mostly 100 on most exams and I took precalc over 7 years ago, and if I recall I missed the last month of class too. However I did take 1140 the semester before Calculus. Now I’m in Differentials and Calc III, no sweating precalc. Like I said again, if you are taking a BA in psychology no worries, but if you are planning on clinical or going to med school, think about your options.

Ya I’m debating the same thing. I took calc AB this year and thought it was easy, but I still struggled with hard problems becuase of difficiencies in my algebra and trig. I think I’m going to take mac 1140 and 1147. As an incoming freshman are we allowed to take only 5 credits over summer B (trig is only 2)? I’m an engineering major btw.

Im bumping this thread because I would really like to know if it is worth it to take 1147 to prepare for mac 2311.

Is 1147 pointlessly hard or is it a good idea to help prepare for calc 1

Is it relatively easy to get an A in 1147 if you study hard?

Bump

@ Batman how hard are differential equations and calculus 3 at UF . I haveto take diff equ in the summer but want to whipe out calc also. I got A’s in calc 1 n 2

Precalculus is weird at first, but once you get the trig down, it is easy.

If you’ve taken calc in highschool, then calc here isn’t hard if you study (like anything else in life I suppose). However, if you haven’t taken calc and haven’t taken precalc here, DO NOT TAKE CALC (this is my experience). I passed the placement test in flying colors (knew all my trig, reasonably good at math) and struggled out of calc with a C+ ( ). However, I’m not in a math-heavy field (biology). Anyhow, tank yourself as much as possible to fluff up that GPA. Who cares about the work? At least it’s doable and you’re not jumping through so many hoops to raise your GPA is my opinion.

For me personally, Mac 1147 was super hard and mac 1140 was super easy. I had took calc in high school and I had to drop mac 1147 durig my first semester. The reason the class is tough is because it goes really quickly and the exams are tricky. But mac 1140 is super easy and slow, especially compared to mac 1147. So if you are really good in math and dont mind the extra work, then you can take mac1147. But if you are only average in math, i would suggest you take mac1140.

I was placed in MAC2311 because I got a 67% on the placement exam and the minimum to take the class was a 65%. I took pre cal senior year but it was kinda fuzzy for me. I got a B. I would take 1147 but so many ppl are saying that its super hard. Anyone have about the same placement score?

I placed into MAC2311 as well but started in 1147 and I found it hard and I had Calc in high school and had A’s the whole time. My overall grade was a B-. I received one A- on a test, the rest were C’s. Did 2311 in spring and I ended up failing with a D+ but I had a lot of personal issues at the time and I found studying difficult as i was thinking about too much. My friends though (who had A’s in 1147) had to drop the class I couldn’t afford to pay back B.F so I had to stay in.
