I did not know that the application fee is waived if you submit part one of the application, the personal form, before the fall. :) Yay Macalester.

It is? I should probably do that:)

Thank you for the information!

that’s another reason to love Mac. Thanks for the heads up

I’ve read CC forever but just recently joined, seeing as how I’m now joining the force of college hopefuls. I think Mac is my first choice. I’m basically really excited. So what other colleges are you guys applying to? Right now I have Grinnell, Rice, Hendrix, and Kalamazoo.

Carleton(1), Mac(2), gustavus, st olaf, kalamazoo, tufts

Thank you CC for saving me 40 bucks. Best of luck to everyone else who’s applying!

I’m also applying to NYU, BU, Carnegie Mellon, Gustavus, and Middlebury.

Gusties^:). Also, why does it say my payment is not due on the common app even though I submitted part one.

I love Mac!! Although I am terrified about the cold in Minnesota.

How long is your supplemental essay on why mac? I’m not sure whether it should be a paragraph or a page? I could probably write a lot, I just don’t know how much they actually want to read.

Definately, they sent me a pack all the way here in s asia! that really made me feel nice.

I sent in the first part of the app. I really like Macalester, but I don’t think it’s my first choice… other definitely-maybe schools: Brown, BU, St. Lawrence, UNH, Skidmore, UConn.

Haha, I had this problem too - the admissions office told me to select “other fee waiver” in the Payments section.

So who is applying ED?

I’m absolutely in love with Mac! I’m going to be so excited if I get in.
sstewart: RD for me.

Yeah if I don’t get in ED to carleton I think I might just EDII to Mac.

I’m not applying ED to Mac. It’s one of my top choices, but I don’t know if it is my top choice. Carnegie Mellon, Chicago, and NYU are all other options, and I’d like to see if I could somehow get into Columbia.

A totally odd mix of radically different schools and locations. May I ask what you’re thinking of majoring in? Just trying to be helpful. My D2 went through the college app process recently and is now a sophomore at Oberlin. We’re originally from Minnesota, now on the east coast. Wife went to Gustavus.

CMU, NYU, BU: very urban and big city
Gustavus and Middlebury: very rural and small town

CMU: very technically oriented, big on engineering, science, IT – in a moderately-priced big city
Gustavus and Middlebury: liberal arts colleges
NYU, BU: traditional private universities in expensive cities

Middlebury, CMU, NYU: Highly selective
BU: Selective
Gustavus: Competitive but not as selective

A very interesting but potentially confusing mix.

I actually applied to different schools than I had:

Swarthmore, Macalester, Carnegie Mellon, NYU, UChicago, Columbia, & Gustavus.

I plan on majoring in a social science (probably economics or political science) while on a pre-med track. I guess I have separate reasons for doing so.

UChicago: I actually haven’t visited there, but I have a few friends who go there and think I’d like it. So, I figured I should test my luck. From what I’ve seen, I’ve really liked it.

Gustavus: Just a financial and admissions safety. It’s like 10 minutes away from my house, and I have a few connections there.

CMU: I don’t know what it is, but I fell in love with it when I toured. I just really like the balance and I loved the size of it. I know it has a great economics program and also strong sciences, so I’m still crossing my fingers.

NYU: It was basically the same feeling as CMU. I just loved it. I loved the atmosphere, and I really like the campus spread out through out Greenwich Village. Plus, I like the unlimited possibilities of research and internships.

Swarthmore: I toured there this summer too, and I really liked their science facilities. I could definitely see myself succeeding by going here. It’s a bit on the smaller side for me (like Macalester), but I think the urban setting makes up for it. But I do like how it’s separated from Philadelphia in some way.

Columbia: Just a reach. It has no doubt strong academics, has a great amount of diversity, and everything about it was perfect.

So, I guess I’m basing a lot of what I want based on location. But the academic portion is just as important. I’ve liked each of the campuses and they all have great academic programs, so I figure I might as well apply. I know that they’re all really different, but I’m really open to where I want to go. Financial aid is a big influence, but I also want to go where I’m going to enjoy my 4 years.

I’m applying RD and fingers crossed, I’ll be visiting some time next spring. :)
