I think I was an interesting applicant to Macalester since I went on a summer program to Japan and learned enough to skip to AP Japanese by my sophomore year.
You were asking me about important admissions factors earlier, and I thought I’d share my thoughts with you.

I think that someway somehow from some part of your application, you should just try to communicate across what’s unique about yourself. So yes, maybe this uniqueness comes through in your essay. And maybe this comes through in other places too, like your extracurriculars or your supplementary material. (Academics and test scores are more of a qualifier in my opinion- to see if you can handle college work)

For myself, I mentioned that a poem went into my file. The poem was just a fun little response to my visit and it wasn’t anything about me. I really liked it, though, and I guess in some ways, I was hoping someone else would like it too, and maybe then they’d see something unique in my poem and something unique in me.

(I’ve wondered a couple times if they’re gonna do anything with that poem, like include it in recruiting brochures. Do colleges ever do that? I mean it IS all about Mac. Kind of an embarrassing thought)

So anyways, I think it’s important to just convince Mac that you’re somebody special and not like the rest of those snobby people who apply to fancy colleges and drink tea with their pinkies held out. Be yourself, be honest, and hopefully some magic thing will poke out.

Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: Macalester was my reach and my dream school and I was so happy when I found my acceptance letter in the mailbox that I cried. If I get enough financial aid this IS the school I will be attending! 2016!

Didn’t get anything in mail today!
I’m quite worried, as I’m sure they wouldn’t send out rejections as the same mailing class as acceptances.
But looking at the stats so far, no one in CA seemed to get any acceptances yet
But yet, soo nervous!

I can’t believe i got in…3.7 UW GPA, 4.7 weighted, superscored a 30 on the ACT but i would say my ECs made up for my test score. wow, i’m in shock! good luck to the waitlisted people, it must be so difficult to choose who gets in and everything and congrats to everyone who got in of course! hoping to get financial aid so i can go there. Oh, i’m a white female from a public school in chicago.

Probably not. Intramurals look pretty good, though. BTW, this is acceptee’s mom. Don’t want anyone to think my S types and writes as poorly as me…
