Has anyone taken MAC 2311 after taking only MAC 1105 and MAC1114?

My current school says that MAC 1105(college alg.) & MAC 1114(trig), together, count as Pre Calc..but apparently the UF websites says you HAVE to take MAC 1140 (pre calc algebra) after MAC 1114 in order to get into Calc 1?

I e-mailed admissions, so hopefully they answer soon because if I do have to take that extra class, I will do so during Summer A (at my C.C) which starts on Monday.

I know a lot of you placed right into Calc out of high school, but for those of you who did it through a math sequence, what pre reqs did you take?

Why don’t you take MAC 1147 before MAC 2311 instead of the sequence of MAC 1140 & MAC 1114? MAC 1147 is Prealculus AND Trig. It’ll be a quicker way to get that out of the way before taking MAC2311 if the school won’t accept the college algebra & trig you have taken already.

I already took Mac 1105 and Mac 1114, which is why I’m wondering if id need to take this extra class (mac 1140) or if I’m good with what I already had. Is “pre calc algebra” and “college algebra” really that different that I’m required to take both courses?

P.s- I never wanted to take mac 1147 which is why I did the two semesters individually, but now apparently mac 1105 doesn’t count for anything :’(

You can just go straight to 2311 if you feel up to it. If you want more prep, then take 1147. Not sure if this is true or not since, I never took 1147…but some have said that 1147 didn’t really help them that much with 2311. In hindsight, they would have gone straight into 2311. Does you major require 2311?

As I was a math tutor at my previous school, tutoring from college algebra up through Calc 3, I can tell you with 100% certainty that pre-calculus is indeed a pre-requisite for Calc 1. Furthermore, I would highly recommend taking it AND reviewing trigonometry before embarking on a challenging journey through the calculus sequence. :)

Thanks for the replies, guys.
I just finished taking trig this semester, and if I have to take MAC1140 id take it in the summer so I can take calc 1 in the fall.
And yes I need to take calc 1 and calc 2. I was just wondering why if “pre calc” is basically algebra and trig, mac 1105 wasn’t enough to cover the “algebra” part of pre calc, since I’ve alrady taken trig. I guess “pre calc algebra” and “college algebra” vary significantly. :/

From what I have seen, college algebra deals with covering basic fundamentals such as polynomials, exponentials, logarithms, etc… In precalc, you’ll take the fundamentals you learned in algebra and apply them all the way up to the part you would use actual calculus. Actually, most of Calc one involves the pre calculus in setting up the problems. You’ll only actually do calculus for maybe one or two steps.
