I've always been a PC man, but now that it's time to choose a college laptop, I'm thinking about making the jump to Macs. Any reason to or not to get an iBook.

Old. Get a macbook.

The iBook was discontinued last month. MacBook is the new entry-level model.

You'll like the stability, interface, and specialized software (iMovie, Keynote, etc) that comes with the MacBook. Plus you can use Boot Camp to run Windows. This is especially good if you already spent money on Office for Windows and don't want to get it for Mac!

I've heard they run warm, as do the old iBooks (except the original clamshell iBooks--I have one and it has a fan in the hard drive!) but that's supposedly the only issue--most every laptop these days gets pretty warm.

I'd recommend a MacBook over any laptop these days.

I got the MacBook and iBook confused. A MacBook is probably what I'll end up getting.

Oh and can you play counter-strike on a MacBook?

^
lol yea I want to know that too. I play css. I doubt it would work because none of the hold ones supported games.

Yes you can play on it if you install Windows XP in a dual boot.

Watch out for the Intagraded card tho, I herd it sucks mucho grande cajones. So id look into that.

macs pretty much suck in general, they are propritary and expensive.

they have there nitch in the world, but in general there is better hardware and freesoftware availible.

Apple has just announced a new educational sale: buy a Macbook/Pro and get a Nano free (pay for the Nano and send in a rebate form for a check back).

The Macbook uses 64 M of shared video ram rather than a dedicated video card. You might be able to run a game, but not at it's maximum settings. You could try using Boot Camp (beta) to run the game in XP, but you would run into the same video ram problem (and you'd have to buy a copy of XP). If you run into any problems in XP, Apple does not supply any support.

The new Intel based Mac laptops appear to run hot. Read through the following Apple forum link: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=500997&tstart=0

^ Thats REAL old news. But apple is starting to fix that, and the flickering screen.

The cost is a concern. I was going to buy one but they were nearly double the cost of the laptops i'm looking at from dell.

Re: Macbook gaming: http://www.macworld.com/2006/06/firstlooks/macbookgames/index.php

or this:

17" is too big to be convenient. I'd recommend getting the 15.4" one.

yikes drew those are expensive

Um, show me a better constructed PC laptop and I'll show you a flying pig. IBM laptops come close, but I still have to give a lead to Apple. Their software is good, hardware is bulletproof, and connectivity with PCs is pretty darn good. You must be smoking some serious drugs to say that Macs "suck in general"

DANG those are some expensive laptops!!!

www.apple.com/education
check out the student discounts...you can get a free I Pod nano with your mac book:-)

Drew you paying about $1,000 more for 2.1" of screen. If you have to have it, get it if not, then get the standard macbook. Plus Pro's arnt fixed yet, and go to apple direct, best buy is doo doo. You get an education discount on apple and a 3yr warranty for like $250. But seriously, get a macbook (non-pro).

If you buy a Macbook and want to use powerpoint/word do you then have to pay for Windows and Microsoft Office?
