Mac or PC for Engineering Students?

Mac or PC? I hear different arguments for and against each, but the PC Recommendations, EIT, Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland website says that a Windows PC is recommended. I really wanted a Mac until I read that post. Anyone here able to say something about this issue? Macs do seem "nicer" but it seems like most of the necessary programs only run on Windows.

In some types on engineering Mac users tend to run into trouble some of the tools used are not made for Mac so one must run a virtual windows environment in order to make them work. I know students in CompE, MechE and AeroE that have had to do this and other majors may require this too.

The Dell laptop the ACT program offers seems pretty nice, especially since it’s made for business. It’s cheaper, too, and I’ll probably be getting a new laptop after 4-6 years anyway. The Macbook Pro is very tempting though.

Which PC are you thinking about getting? Are you planning on upgrading memory? Do you know what programs are loaded on the laptop.

thanks

Buy a PC. After answering that, you need to ask yourself if you really need the four year warranty UMD offers. If not, you can find a cheaper (and sometimes better) laptop out on the market.

I got the Latitude through UMD . yes, you can find a cheaper laptop out there but not many are as durable as the Latitude (if you are going to look elsewhere I recommend Lenovo). I really like my Latitude though and I use it very heavily as a CompE major. I upgraded to 4 gig of memory and I dont remember if I upgraded processor or not (I have an i5 though).
