Hey guys, i'v been monitoring these forums for a couple months through the whole application process but have never posted! Anyway i have been accepted to St. Pauls, Choate, Groton, and have been waitlisted at hotchkiss. I want to know what you guys with experience think the best thing to get is. What is the "cool" thing to have and what works best.

it's easier to have windows at any campus because of sofware sharing (90% of computer owners have PC's...same exact % for andover's campus as well) and configuring and all of that (and they're cheaper), but macs have always been better computers.

windows. The campuses that i know are more compatable to window than mac even tho they say they support both, and this make sense considering that more than 90% of computer users use window while mac and linux share the rest.

like at hotchkiss, we have 2 computer labs. One fulll of windows and the other one is a mix of windows and mac. All library computers are windows. All lab computers are windows. The laptops that they give teachers are windows.

"but macs have always been better computers"
hell no

PC's are so cheap these days, it's ridiculous.. I'm pretty sure you can get a high quality, high memory brand-new PC laptop for under $400 these days, can't you? while macs are $2500...

no a decent one cost at least $1500-2000.... and $2500 macs are the high end ones...

plus...alienware laptops are like $6000 and up....never seen a mac so expensive

however i would wait to get one, b/c the new leopard operating system is coming out.

why mac?????
-never crash, never get virus
-simple and easy to use
-if you wait for leopard windows will already be on it (i think)(i u HAVE to have one now, just download the program BOOTCAMP, let u run windows)
-AMAZINg graphics
-built in CAMERA!!!!!! =)
-macs, are sexy

if your computer DOES get a problem, service is super easy, even a baby can do it, WHY? b/c there are SOO many companies that use windows, DELL, HP, TOSHIBA......only apple uses mac so there is no problem with customizations.

i got a dell laptop, HORRIBLE, the repair guy came over a fixed it 2 times in 3 months, even he said dells are bad and that he had to hurry to the next house. that why i donated my dell and got an apple ^_^

if u can afford a mac, get one (standard ~$2000, comfortable equip., >2500, for me)

if u dont want an mac and have to get windows, get an HP

some campuses are actually set up for macs.(suffield is one) You can find that information on the school technology portion of the website. Just check before purchasing.

Yeah, I really don't think you can go wrong with macs. I got one on the 12th and I love it...it operates so much better than windows. You just really need to learn to ins and outs of using one. I'm writing a research paper in English class on macbooks and I would be more than happy to PM you it when I'm finished. My research paper will contain every last piece of info. you'd ever want on macbooks...

If you're not already in one camp or the other, first decide on the school, and then go with its infrastructure, be it Mac or Windows. If you're already entrenched one way or the other, you can probably stick with what you know; MS apps can interchange all files, and email systems can usually handle both.

hmm while its true schools are mostly windows based, a LOT of kids are picking up macbooks (as i have). you won't really run into problems with anything, lest you're a gamer/programmer. design is great on macs. headache free. and, no, i'd say w/ education discount, you can get a great mac for 1000-1500 (depending on if you want desktop, laptop, hardware etc.)

when i was looking for the right computer, the macbook cost $100 less than this dell i liked, but then again, exeter offered a $300 scholarship off dells, so check with your school.

mac's OS is superior, of course, and life becomes so much easier. i get stressed when i use a windows computer now ^.^, so just juggle price vs. easiness and better experience (and coolness.)

and yeah, if i do want to play cs or sc, i just boot into windows ^.^
