<p>What are some must-have programs for mac? Obviously, there are a lot that come bundled, but what do you suggest are cool or useful free programs that are available out there?</p>

<p>Skype (definitely usefull in college), I second Camino and Flip4Mac--dont use Firefox, as the mac version is bad. Handbrake and iSquint are great if you have an iPod with video. You can also find alot of great widgets online that range from useful to fun.</p>
<p>I highly recommend VLC media player. It plays almost anything.</p>
<p>IALertU is a great program for college, perfect for security.</p>
<p>ditto for Adium, it's the best program for using AIM that i've found.</p>
<p>I use Transmission of bit torrent but there's also Bits on Wheels that is good, I found Azureus to be too slow.</p>
<p>for p2p downloading there's a program called Acquisition that's great.</p>
<p>VLC Player is my video player of choice also.</p>
<p>I use a mix of LimeWire and Acquisition for P2P. I use Transmission for BT.</p>
<p>Call me crazy, but I use Safari.</p>
<p>VLC is good, so is Adium, so is Quicksilver.</p>
<p>TextMate is a must-have for any programmer. It is thousands and thousands of times better than BBEdit or TextWrangler for text editing. It costs money, but to a coder of any kind, it's totally worth it.</p>
<p>Cyberduck is good for FTP.</p>
<p>And of course, Google Earth is nice to have just for fun.</p>

<p>I also use Safari, to me, Camino and FireFox are both quite a bit slower. Although I always used FireFox on my PC.</p>

<p>No, but google is. In fact, just typing "define: your program name" will get you a nice description of most programs.</p>

basically MSword/excel/ppt or mac equivalent, but multiplatform and in opendocument format (you can view and edit microsoft files as well as mac files with no problem, and save in any format, windows or mac)</p>

Senuti takes the songs from your iPod and puts them onto your mac.
transmission is a grea bittorrent application.
Flip4Mac allows you to play WMV files using quicktime
Adium is a great chat client
Colloquoy is a great IRC client
Quicksilver is a launching program, but oh so much better
Skype for making calls
Handbrake is good for ripping dvds
Camino for web browsing</p>

<p>There's lots of free stuff that comes with Macs that is pretty good (like iLife), although I can't say I'm a big fan of Safari.</p>
<p>I use it mostly because it's there and I don't like either Firefox or IE for Mac (although I use IE on my OS 9 Mac since it's the only reasonably good one for it). I've found Safari to be slow and to crash a lot, especially on certain sites. If anyone else has had problems with the MLB sites on Safari, let me know.</p>
<p>Firefox for Windows is probably my favorite browser. If only the Mac version was bug-tested a bit better.</p>
<p>AppleWorks should come with your Mac, and for being free it does most things pretty well. The word processor and spreadsheet are reportedly compatable with Word and Excel. I like the drawing mode the best.</p>
<p>I'm looking for a good free mail client that is better than Apple's Mail program. I know Claris eMailer is great on OS 9, but I need something for X for my new Mac.</p>
