Also:
Adobe Acrobat, MS Office 11 for Mac, caffeine, coconut battery, hotspot shield, firefox, Open Office, monolingual, skype, realplayer, iExtract, stuffit, iWork

Some of these you’ll already know from the windows world, some are mac-only apps.

AppCleaner for when you may need to remove apps from your Mac.
Audacity for recording things.
Avast for virus protection.
F.lux for those long nights of computer usage.
Google Chrome for when Safari ticks you off.
Handbrake.
iStudiez Lite/Pro for school schedules/assignments.
Swackett/Swackett X are weather apps that are pretty nice.
The Twitter app.
VLC
Wunderlist - list making app.

I too recommend MS Office 11 (don’t get 2008 it rather sucks), caffeine, Coconut Battery, Skype and iWork.

But if I get iWork, will I need to get MS Office?

I would recommend it to be honest. Many schools and work places still use MS Office as the office suite and even though you can save and open MS documents in iWork some features WILL NOT carry over.

That beautiful flyer you did in iWork that needs printed from Word? Ruined. Sometimes ts worth not having the deadache.

Check with your campus bookstore. Many sell Microsoft products for as low as $10.

Growly Notes is really similar to Microsoft One Note and it’s free (One Note isn’t available for Macs.)
