I've heard that NYU prefers Macs. I prefer Macs. My parents don't want to spend the money for a Mac and want me to get a PC. Is there any concrete statement that NYU prefers Macs so I can convince them it's the only option? I already told them about my friend's roommate who has had many problems with her PC on the network (including multiple viruses), but they think I'm making it up.

When I was a freshman, a dorm-wide virus affected every single computer in my four-person suite…except my roommate’s Powerbook. Personally, I prefer my Mac, as it has lasted me infinitely longer than any PC I’ve ever heard. But overall, it doesn’t really matter unless you’re in Tisch and need Final Cut or something.

Macs don’t get as many viruses because they don’t have enough market share for people to waste their time writing viruses for them-- not because their software is superior.

While that is true to a certain extent, OS X is also built on top of UNIX, which is a very secure OS. Windows, on the other hand, is carrying around about 20 years of legacy code with each release so there are many holes.

Still, the worst possible thing that you can do is think that just because you have a Mac you’re safe from everything. Macs are better than PC’s, no doubt, but they can still be hacked.

If you’re not doing any graphics design or video editing save your money and pick up a windows pc. And once windows 7 comes out, upgrade to that. It’s going to be a huge hit, GREAT os.

NYU generally supports both Macs and PCs; searching the NYU web site shows very few places where Mac is required (e.g., [Photography and Imaging Portfolio Requirements: Tisch School of the Arts at NYU](<a href=“Special Programs”>Special Programs)).

Macs do have fewer problems with viruses, etc.

I know that Macs aren’t completely safe…I just don’t like PCs and prefer Macs for a multitude of reasons, even if PCs are cheaper. I find that Macs are more user-friendly and I do like to do graphics stuff in my free time as a hobby. But, really, I just prefer the Mac operating system so I need concrete proof that Macs are better for NYU to show my parents.

the thing is, there IS no concrete proof. a lot of people use Macs in NYU and in Manhattan in general. however, there’s no REAL reason you absolutely need a Mac.

every single person in my video game class used a Mac, hahaha. our professor called it “a mac commercial on steroids”.

I’ve heard multiple times that a vast majority of stern kids are on pc’s. Its better supported by Sterns tech support, and is widely used in the business community.

you will do fine with either.

^ Yes, but Tisch has some Mac-only issues, and Stern may prefer PCs; if you’re headed to one of these, do some more investigation (e.g., call the schools!).
