Mac v thinkpad at Wake

Is the campus noticeably PC-centric? How would a student involved in the creative/digital arts (music technology) and accustomed to using a Mac fare with the school being a PC rather than a Mac environment? Are there students who bring Macs and also use the Lenovo computers? Can the Mac access all of the library and university systems, etc?

My son says his roommate used a Mac only. Never touched the laptop issued by the school. He had no problems with connectivity or access. :)

I saw people around campus all the time with Mac computers, so I guess it worked for them alright. If there was anything I really liked about Wake Forest, it was how efficiently the university is run, including the IT services. If you brought a Mac there and needed IT help, I don’t doubt for a second you’d get everything taken care of.

I would say MOST students just use their Wake Thinkpads, but Macs also have a big presence on campus. The really nice thing about the Thinkpads is that you can access Photoshop, Paintshop, etc, from them … for free. If that’s what you’re into then you know how expensive that software is! Although Wake only has limited licenses for each program, you will never have an issue accessing the software from your Thinkpad unless a Comp Sci class is using one for lab.

I would say that most people who bring their Macs use their Macs ~99% of the time, only using their Thinkpads when their use is required (Comp Sci labs, certain class projects/in class assignments, etc).

Although I am the verrrry first person to admit that the Thinkpads are not the greatest computers ever, I’m using mine right now. It’s definitely not a bad laptop and it’s really nice that it’s a “standard” type thing; everyone has one, everyone knows how to use one, everything can be accesses the same way on them; IS knows how to fix them. :)

I personally have had a mac laptop for like 5 years and kept using one at wake. I think I touched my thinkpad 5 times all year and had no problems at all.

The only advantage the thinkpad has is it does have some expensive programs that I may use in the future that I dont have on my Mac (say a statistics program)

I only have a thinkpad and it works pretty good (btw i joined Wake last year). The previous version of thinkpads had some problems but not many people had problems this year. Also, you can connect to their network even when you’re away… all you have to do is use a VPN network installed in ur PC and you can access all the cool apps already installed, like Photoshop and stuff. They do have an Audio program called Audacity.

Once connected to wake network, you will have access to most of the scientific magazines n stuff.

One of my hobbies is Video Game Designing and I run a 3D modelling program and a game engine developing software which are both very heavy and they both run smoothly together. In addition I normally have many tabs open with Dreamweaver open and sometimes a MMORPG game. They all run smoothly even if i don’t shut down the laptop for like weeks.

Hope this helps :)

P.S: You’ll be using laptops for everything at Wake.
