Mac vs. PC

I have been accepted to Brown ED and am planning on buying a new laptop before next fall. Is there any input if Brown is more PC or Mac based? Thanks!

I applied to Brown RD this year. I don’t know if Brown is more PC or Mac, but it shouldn’t matter. Personally, I love Macs. They’re much faster, have HD screens, and just a better system. The best thing is that you never get viruses! People who use PCs, please don’t hate on me… I have a feeling that this might turn into a huge MAC vs. PC war.

p.s. Congratulations! I hope I get into Brown, too :)

Go Mac. I just got a 15" Macbook Pro for Christmas and it’s dank. I’ve been PC all my life and I’m glad I made the switch, less viruses and smoother operating. Less viruses is necessary for college life haha all those illegal music downloads and such…

^yes, exactly. You know what they say… once you go Mac, you never go back ;)

People use both Macs and PCs at Brown. A lot of people have Macs. The bookstore sells Macs (and PCs), and there is an Apple store in the Providence Mall.

If you’re going with a Mac, you might want to wait until the summer, when Apple typically offers a free Touch/iPod to students who buy a computer. Don’t forget about educational discounts (which save you about $100 on hardware). Another important thing to know – the bookstore sells some common software (like Office) for considerably cheaper than you can get anywhere else.

It’s probably around 60/40 Mac/PC from what I’ve observed. Definitely wait until the summer for the educational promotion from Apple if you’re going to get a Mac. However, there’s no need to buy a Mac from the Brown bookstore - just get it at the beginning of the summer so you have time to get used to it. Either is very usable on campus, though. It’s really a matter of personal preference and what you’re most comfortable with.

Definitely a vast majority of kids have macbooks. Apple should be releasing new ones soon, another incentive to wait.

Daughter is on her second Mac (she’s a senior) and has loved it. We bought them both at the Brown Bookstore so that in case she needed tech help, she would have it totally taken care of there. I don’t guess it really mattered that we bought it there, but we did. They were really helpful. For the second one, not only did she get an iPod touch, but also a free printer. End of August. That was an Apple offer, not a Brown offer.

Yeah, I also agree you should wait… at least until new models are released.

thanks everyone, from what I’ve heard here and elsewhere I am def leaning toward a mac but going to wait until summer and deals come out.

Eh. I wish my computer had the Mac’s touchpad/multi-touch capabilities (I have a 1.5-yr. old dell). However, I run Ubuntu so my computer acts pretty similarly to a mac, and yeah. I run my computer too hard to have a mac anyways (they can overheat due to their lack of vents).

I appear to be the lone windows user here…although Dells are supported by the Bookstore, I’d advise against them for Windows…this is the first computer I’ve ever had any trouble with at all. Even as a computer scientist, I’m not incredibly comfortable with Macs. I notice a lot more macs in my classes, but it seems that most computer science people I know use Linux and/or Windows instead, for what it’s worth (which is probably not much).
