While I have been visiting a lot of college campus and talking to their admission counselors, many have been undecided on the best computer operating system for architecture. I know some schools require that you buy one of their computers, but I was wondering for a general idea of whether a PC or MAC is better for architecture purposes.

Id like to know too. Im going to wait until I get there and ask my teachers which they use. If I have the same OS as them they can provide me with help with the archie software.

I use linux right now but I assume I will have to switch to one of the commercial OS's after my first year.

Most of the schools list the computer requirements on their website. Some schools have specific requirements for architecture. The websites will usually indicate what is required.

Autocad now controls most of the significant software programs for the industry; Autocad, Revit, and 3D Studio Max. Autodesk does not write software for the Mac. Other programs such as form.z, and Sketchup run on both. However, in our tests a Mac running Windows with Bootcamp was faster than a similar Windows only machine. So if you prefer a Mac you will be under no handicap, and will have a slight advantage when pulling together your presentations.
