I passed my AP calc AB exam with a 4 so I can take MAC2234 but I don't know if it would be better to take MAC2233 just to get used to a real college calculus class. Any advice?

Whats your major? Business?

Im trying to figure out why you are taking Survey of Calc if you got a 4 on BC. Have you thought about the normal Calc sequence.

Yeah my major is Accounting

Gotcha.

All right when it comes to stuff like this only you know the answer. People can cram for the exam and do amazing. But one week later they forget it all. So did you conceptionally understand what you were doing? Did you struggle through the material? How confident are you in the class?

If you feel confident then feel free to start 2234. But if you would like an easier first semester then you can always do 2233. This would allow you to focus on college life and have more fun. Worst case scenario just sign up for 2234 and see how the first week goes. See if you like the pace and the material. You can always drop it and switch.

Thank you. Very useful advice!

“yeah my major is accounting”

Let god be with you. >40% of intended accounting majors including myself in that list end up switching to another business major like finance, marketing, etc.

Accounting is brutal AT UF

Too graduate with honors from your B.s in accounting you ONLY need a 3.2 GPA…

Wish you the very best and you absolutely must take 15-16 credits a semester when your admitted too the fisher school due to the limited seating.

My daughter just graduated in June with her BS in Accounting. She also had passed the AP test but with a 3 so had credit for MAC 2311. She took MAC 2234. It was not difficult at all and she got an A- without much problem. Calculus is not a required skill set for accounting, so I would think it could be a waste of college credits/money and time to take MAC 2233 before MAC 2234.

Also, I’m not sure why the lazman said you had to always take 15-16 credits to get the classes you need. This was not the case at all. She usually took 13 hours and only took 15 once and graduated in 3 years. There was no difficulty getting classes at all.

Accounting is very difficult at UF. My D started Pre-Pharm, switched to Finance then Accounting. Difficult but not impossible.

I spoke to Mr. Henry Anderson undergrad co-ordinator and along with Mr. Dominique desantiago department chair and when they layout a course guide that you need to take a semester to graduate within 4 years it’s always 15-16 credits a semester cause all upper division classes are 4 credits with few elective exceptions. And going too the fisher school of accounting part time is non existent as you would have to make a petition and be forwarded to the accounting business committee too approve for you too go to school part time.

There extremely strict in the accounting program at UF and especially being a Limited access major.

As The department chair told me sometime in early April, “were trying to get people in and out for we could bring in more students,” this is why we don’t allow students to go part time unless there is an extreme circumstance."

I don’t know how your daughter was able too take 13 credits unless it was her last semester and didn’t need to take 15 credits.

Only summer your allowed to take different amounts of credits not needing too be 15 16

True, part time is not allowed, but 12 hours is a full time student. My D had 10 credits coming in from AP/CLEP, and then took 6-10 hours each summer. She was always well ahead on the tracking so there was never any pressure to take a certain number of hours.

She did visit with the advisors including Henry once a semester, but like I said she was on track to graduate early, so never had any pressure to take a certain number of credits.

I can see if you didn’t take summer classes or have AP credit then yes, you’d have to take 15 hours a semester to graduate in four years. But everyone has to take summer and many people have test credits, so 15-16 is not a requirement. 12-14 is a great full time load and is more than enough to graduate on time if not early if you select your classes wisely.

So back to the OP, no you don’t need to take MAC 2233 if you have credit for MAC 2311 as MAC 2311 is more difficult than MAC 2233 in the first place. The calculus for business majors is not nearly as hard the Survey of Calculus series.
