Macalaster 2017

anouilh’s D and mine both received letters today saying they were awarded DeWitt Wallace Distinguished Scholarships. I believe anouilh also had FA package.

Nope. When I called FA on Tuesday, they said they had all our FA info and would be sending out the award “tomorrow or the day after.” On Wednesday they must have sent the DeWitt Wallace letter. In that letter it says that financial aid info will follow in a few days. So the wait continues, but the signs are encouraging. :-)

They got my senior grades the day after Valentine’s Day, so hopefully that’s why I haven’t heard anything… A little nervous though.

@SgtDonut - Right there with ya…my school was terribly slow in getting them prepared. Hopefully we both get good news in a few weeks.

I don’t there’s any reason to worry for either of us, I just feel like this process was anxiety-inducing enough, and then they add on the stress of seeing other students get in early… I was lucky to hear from Grinnell about three weeks ago, but Mac is one of my very top choices, so it would be nice to have gotten accepted early. </3

Yeah, it’s pretty terrible having to wait in limbo for so many months. And that’s great! Congrats! Grinnell is an exceptional school as well.
All I know so far is that I’m into my plan Z, the honors program at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities; I really didn’t want to go to a large university.

Aloha, the fin aid letter came today. The amount is doable for our family, which is what a need-based package aims for.

@anouilh: Thank you for the update…I will let D know to expect it in the mail in the next couple days. Keeping our fingers (and toes) crossed. Aloha,

Good luck, Aloha, and let us know. I think my fingers and toes are permanently crossed at this point. :)

D received her Fin Aid letter today and it was right in the middle of our estimates. Could have been a few thousand more or many thousands less, so overall very relieved. Just super glad it was not terrible. Definitely keeps Mac in the running. Best of luck everyone. With Aloha…

S got accepted with DeWitt Scholarship at $16k a year. We’re waiting on Finaid now. Seeing if its doable. Grinnell gave us a preliminary one that was very doable.

Congratulations santookie!

Congrats santookie, and hurrah, Aloha!

Hi, our D got in with Dewitt Scholarship of $16,000 as well. We are also waiting on financial aid. Our situation may be rocky next year so it matters. We are also waiting on other colleges, but I must say the love-bombing from Macalester is effective! I’m just wondering if it’s as good as it sounds. I so want my D to have an inspiring experience.

Congratulations to all those who got accepted can you post your stats as well please

I got my acceptance letter last week and a 16k/year DeWitt Scholarship  SAT 1470/2150, GPA 3.96uw/4.31w, 4s and 5s on all APs, National Merit Commended, lots of diverse ECs. The financial aid is a little more than we hoped for, but my family would still have to borrow considerably to make it doable. We sent in updated forms hoping for a little more.

Congrats everyone! I probably will not get in because my stats were not as awesome as everyone’s here plus I asked for a lot of FA.

Mac is a great school!

Mahalo Anouilh. And congrats to you as well.

@ alisiddiqui94:
My D’s basic stats are:
GPA 3.9 (one B in four years, in AP Bio, which happened to be the second highest in the class. Still received a 5 on the test), 4.4 weighted
ACT: 31 (even though I bought numerous test prep books, she never actually opened them or studied for the tests, grrr…)
6 APs
Decent ECs (most interesting were): Paddling Captain last two years (outrigger canoe paddling is the state sport) and an active member/contributor of online writing community.
She attends a difficult private College-Prep high school (with about half the class being boarders from around the world).

@MysticalKites
Don’t be discouraged. This is my take on Mac’s admissions criteria. I think they spend a considerable amount of time and energy in creating a diverse and ultra-balanced student body; more so than any other LAC she has applied to. Although important, I also think it goes deeper than just geography, major, race, and sex. Not sure how much weight they assign to these other unknown interests, but I think it is higher than similar schools like Carleton or Grinnell (just an opinion everyone, please don’t blast me for this).
Would my D have been accepted to Mac based on test scores alone if she was applying from a public school in MN? Possibly not. But when you add in small rural Hawaii, passionate about writing with accolades, excels in an unusual sport, and comes from a private school that regularly sends a % of their students to the Ivies (including MIT and Stanford) every year, you have an admitted.

Side Note: D is not really talking much lately about college choices (I think she is a little overwhelmed). At the time of applying; Mac, Carleton, and Williams were her top three choices. Waiting for replies from the other two now.
Aloha,

@AlohaScott those are really good stats Congrats to your D. After seeing these top stands I think I don’t have any chance at Mac.

alisiddiqui94, my D’s stats are much like those posted here, maybe a little lower on the SAT’s. She goes to a public school with an IB program. EC 's include language study scholarships.

Congratulations to all admitted, and I am rooting for those still waiting like alisiddiqui94 and Mysticalkites. Applying from abroad is especially difficult and commendable.
