Are people accepted for the class of 2017 that applied RD? or EDII?

Thirrdplanet: people that have posted got likely letters and applied RD.

ardentgardner – my husband gave a guest lecture (and led some seminars) at Mac four years ago, and he came home verrrry impressed. He says Mac really is all that. My daughter hasn’t visited yet, but we’re hoping she’ll be equally impressed.

Mystical and ali – Please don’t psych yourselves out by looking at these stats. The reason Mac admitted these students early is because they are unusually qualified, at the top of the applicant pool, and are likely to have other strong choices. Mac is trying to get their attention by admitting them early. Most other admits will have less arresting stats.

@anouilh see it from my point of view. I am a international, I have achieved 2A, 3A, 3Bs in O-Level, I have a 4.0 GPA, my predicted A-Level grades are 3A, and I have a 27 in the ACT. Moreover I can only pay maximum of $2000/year. So in reality it’s all on luck if I get accepted at Macalester with almost full aid.

anouilh: Thanks, part of me is still hopeful for Mac, I think I wrote some good essays and supplement and also submitted an arts portfolio. What I mostly think is holding me back from admittance is how much FA I asked for because I know Mac is a school that looks at EFCs when determining who to admit.

ali & mystical, I completely sympathize with your anxiety. Knowing that your financial need may work against you is distressing. In general, at schools like Macalester, most students will be admitted without regard to need. When the funds in the FA coffers are getting low, admissions reps will look at the remaining candidates for admission and decide which they can afford to admit. I don’t know if that’s how it works at Mac, and of course if you don’t get in you won’t know why. That, like almost everything else about holistic admissions, is frustrating.

What I was trying to say to you is that knowing the stats of a few admits at the very top of Macalester’s pool tells you nothing new. You’ve already checked out Mac’s admissions statistics. You know what the typical range of admits looks like. Seeing the stats of a few students that Mac is actively courting has no bearing at all on your chances of admission.

I wish you both the best of luck. Please let us know how it turns out.

@anouilh Thank You

Thanks for your thoughtful messages, anouilh.

I have noticed (on the web site) that Macalester places a strong emphasis on its faculty, which is a great sign. From past experience I also know that they hire original thinkers with strong teaching skills. My D attends a great public school with wonderful teachers, but due to budget cuts and al the woes of public education, the teachers are painfully overburdened with too many students etc. So my D would benefit from very good teaching, esp of writing. She’s a natural writer, but her teachers have had little time to help her develop; it’s a very labor-intensive process, teaching writing.

At any rate, I’m seeing lots of plusses. My D is waiting for other replies, but offering us the chance to think over Macalester at this early stage is definitely a great strategy on Macalester’s part!

Hi all - current Macalester student here who has semi-knowledge about the acceptance process here. The RD letters go out in two phases: one in late February, and then the rest sometime in March (usually before the April 1 Day of Dread). Just because you didn’t get a letter from the first round does NOT mean you won’t be getting in - and I wouldn’t stress yourself out about it! There’s still plenty of YES letters going out! From what I remember from last year, the financial aid letters went out about 2-3 days after the first round and no more than 2-weeks after the second round.

Good luck to all of you, and excited to see the Class of 2017 here on campus!

Hello,

Does anyone have information based on past experience when the second round RD decisions are usually announced by Mac? Thanks!

Hi, someone on a different Macalester thread posted these dates based on scanning past postings for receiving RD batch 2 acceptance letters. So, it looks like next week is a possibility!

Good luck to all.

Admit year: Date
2012: 3-17
2011: 3-21
2010: 3-19
2009: 3-17

Hi all! Current Macalester student here. We all just got an email about making calls to admitted students to answer questions about Macalester, college life, etc. We will be starting those calls on the 25th of March, and they usually start a few days to a week after letters go out (long enough after the actual letter sending that everyone should have already received their letter and decision notice). Good luck to everyone! (:

Thanks for the update, grizzzlybelle!

Thanks grizzlebelle

Any internationals get their results back yet? I’ve also applied for a lot of financial aid and I’m really nervous…

Looks like letters will be sent out next week, good luck everybody!

@grizzlybelle: Isn’t the 25th the first day you get back to campus after break? Last year it seemed as if letters went out the Friday before break, and started arriving Saturday (in MN). If the same goes this year, folks could start hearing today.

Indeed D just received (about 15 minutes ago) her admission packet in the mail here in the St. Paul area.

Wow Descartesz, so they are already out? Thanks for the heads up.
Also congrats to your D!

Woah hopefully I will hear monday or tuesday on the west coast!
